Lack of Dedicated Servers
Is completely ridiculous. My friend group play games at different times with some overlap. Its literally impossible for us to play this one together. If Valheim, Terraria, Conan, Ark, and every other janky half baked pos Unity asset flip survival game can figure it out, how can Obsidian not?

How is it possible to develop a game in 2020-2022 without dedicated server support?!? In the words of Robin Williams from Jumanji "WHAT YEAR IS IT???".

I guess Obsidian thinks it's sometime in the WAY early 90's because even some DOS games had dedicated servers. I was looking forward to this game until I started Googling and found this thread, unfortunate news.

Hopefully the find the time machine they need to add a feature that has been part of games for the better part of 25 years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The next update that is coming out this week has a feature called shared worlds it’s not exactly like dedicated servers but basically works the same so you and your friends will be able to play at different times on the same save file

That is cool and all but I feel like the point is being missed that dedicated servers are a fundamental feature nowadays for multiplayer games

Uhhh, FYI Dedicated servers have been in decline since '11.

Its not 'standard' anymore.

The year has nothing to do with it. If the year did have something to do with it then where is my flying car? I want my flying volkswagon bug.

Again year has nothing to do with anything. It's all about what the dev wishes to put into the game, and that is it.

I just have one concern with shared worlds.. What happens if the shared save file gets corrupted?

Many people have misconceptions what a Shared World is and is not. So for them, here is a post to read: https://www.reddit.com/r/GroundedGame/comments/wqvy8u/shared_worlds_what_they_are_and_what_they_arent/

Shared world sounds cool but it'll suck if the file gets corrupted.

its recommend to keep backups of all your savegames where you can and not just for ground.

Personally i keep my savegames backuped on a pindrive and yea i backup alot too and always keep my backups updated as much i can.

I understand that, but if I am not online and my friends are using the world they will have to remember to back up the save and I highly doubt my friends or even other people's friends will remember to do such a thing, since it's not a common thing that people do.

Not to mention the more shared the world is the more likely the issue will arise.

Shared worlds seems like too much risk & little to no reward.
They do not even resolve any of the issues that would be covered by a private dedicated server.
KieSeyHow Aug 26, 2022 @ 12:44pm
I think the game still keeps the number of backup files you set, up to five backups.
Bovine Aug 29, 2022 @ 4:58pm
I really hope shared worlds isn't intended to be a replacement for dedicated servers
KieSeyHow Aug 31, 2022 @ 12:03pm
There never have been dedicated servers for this game. It is a Peer-to-peer multiplayer game. Also the Shared Worlds work just like Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive. The only "dedicated servers" are the logon servers for Xbox Live, Gamepass, and Steam.
