Other than that, Blocking Blocking Blocking. So you dont get Poisoned. You only get Poisoned when it hits you. (As long you dont have the Mutation) Learn the Attack mechanic and you know when you can attack and when you need to Block.
Barbarian is for clubs, not swords. The wolf spider is weak to spicy and slashing, so unless you have a spicy antlion sword it's better to use the Coaltana.
coaltana slices and dices wolfies... find a video on the wolfie's attack patterns. learn them and perfect block them consistently, which reduces poison damage
so what your saying is you can shoot a gas arrow next to a sleeping wolf spider and it just stays sleeping and suffocates to death from the gas without ever being aggro'd or woken up?
If you get great at blocking you can take them down with a t3 melee weapon. Otherwise, as of today, you can set up mine fields, turrets, and traps to take them down! but oh joy! now they can jump!
♥♥♥♥ US ALL!!!
1. I recommend at least Acorn Armor. This will give you the defense to be able to take a few hits from the Wolf without dying super fast.
2. Poison isn't near as deadly as it used to be but you'll still need to account for it if you do take a hit. Bring bandages and smoothies if you have them. And yes, he does give you time between hits to heal/apply a bandage.
3. They are weak to slash so early game your best weapon against them would be the axe.
Wolf Spiders really only have four attacks that you have to memorize. As you learn both their sounds and their body language for their attacks it will become much easier to deal with them.
1. 5 hit combo. This is their deadliest move when you aren't used to them as if you take all 5 hits you're pretty much going to die. Best I can give for seeing this move is Wolf will raise just his right legs up before starting it. Oddly enough hit 3 will usually miss. Also be wary of the slight delay between hit 4 and hit 5. Block timings are pretty much right when you would think when watching it.
2. Jump attack. Also can be tricky for newer players. He will briefly crouch and raise both front legs up before leaping straight up into the air. Block timing is pretty much right after he is off your screen.
3. Crouching lunge. He will stand up a bit higher off the ground before then leaning backward and lunging forward again. This is his slowest attack but the end where he hits is a bit faster. Biggest tell of this one is at the start and how he doesn't do anything for a second or two. Block timing is as he finishes leaning back/starting to come forward again.
4. Normal hit. His easiest attack though it does come out a bit quick. He will lean away from you (and sort of at an angle so he will be leaning slightly left or right) before coming forward again to bite. He will also visibly move his mouth parts a few times. The tell for this is the pose and mouth movement. Block timing is pretty much right after his mouth quits moving.
Here's a bit of practice I did this morning for this update for showing block timings on Wolf with basic gear and no perks equipped. I also then have a second part where I deliberately take some hits to show that it is usually survivable as well as how it is safe to heal between hits. All was recorded on normal/medium difficulty.

Honestly Wolf spiders got fairly nerfed in damage it feels like. Sure, Acorn armor is considered heavy now but still I was surprised how little damage he did (outside of the 5 hit combo). Crouching lunge used to be a one hit kill (you'd survive but poison would often finish you). Jump attack was usually game over as well.
This!! Wolf Spiders aren't the only insects that jump now. Be wary & stay grounded
