It's actually not too bad with the right gear, just takes patience, and you can find their spawn spots on the map with the resource scanner, once you have caught your 1st one and analyzed the twinkling shell

There is actually a backpack in a corner between the woodpile and the deck which contains a twinkling shell. Once you find that you can use the scanner to track them before you kill one. Saves a lot of frustration.

When you hunt scarabs move slow and be patient. Stick to higher ground and have select lanes of fire. Most of the time you are in the grass, so keep specific lanes open and let the scarab wander into them. If he bolts, stay calm and dont chase it. Move to the next high ground position in the direction it went and keep your head on a swivel. It's coming back. I use the lvl 5 crossbow with splinter arrows, marksman cap, and the shooting perk. They die in 1 shot and are super fun to stalk. Just use the scanner to tell when they are in the zone and watch out for larva.

Not sure what you mean. My upgraded crossbow can one shot the scarabs without hat or mutation.
