Difference between grubs and larva?
I made an acorn shovel, and was going to dig up a grub, when I hit a larva instead. I've recently started playing again, after some updates introducing flying insects other than gnats, before bees and when creative mode didn't have much of insects much less the carp. I'm wondering if some more experienced players could tell me what to look for, if it's sound or visual cues that can show me what I'm about to dig up, before digging it up.

Grubs are buried underground and leave little trails in the dirt as they move showing you where to dig them up. They are helpless and can do nothing except lay there once you dig them up. Wait long enough and they will dig back underground again.

Larva are found both above ground or in caves. They are not buried as grubs are. They are aggressive and will attack you on sight and usually travel in packs.

Of course larva can also be buried underground, like grubs! o.0

https://grounded.fandom.com/wiki/Larva

Larva will also burrow in the ground passively, which to the player will appear identical to Grubs. Larva will not attack the player in this state, but will become aggressive if the player digs them up with a Shovel, similarly to harvesting a Grub. Due of this, the player should take caution when harvesting Grubs, and should be ready for the possibility of fighting a Larva. It should also be noted that these burrowing Larva appear to be much more aggressive then usual and will attack at a faster intervals then ordinary Larva. Also due to a glitch, Larva found in the ground will make the same sound as Grubs (when damaged and harvested) as well as not counting for the Kill Larva Quest.

Oh wow, didn’t know that. Near 100 hours in the game and have never seen that. Thanks for the info.
