Personally I found using the Insect Axe on the Broodmother and saving Mint Mace for little spiders was better due to running out of stamina far too often.
Using Insect Axe also let me use a shield which gave me a bit more safety. If you don’t have the shield you MUST perfect block her hits to avoid the poison (I didn’t have the perk for that and preferred to have my perks be more offensive).
Other than that it’s just practice. Here’s my fight if it helps you. Skip to 40:00 in this episode.

How do you upgrade?
A Gastro Goo smoothie or two and some gas arrows can also help, but i've found the damage too low to reliably deal with the mini orb weavers by itself.
For me it was really the adds that made the fight challenging at all, the broodmother itself is easy enough if you can block normal spiders reliably. Splatbursts made them easy after a few tries to get used to them, i definitely recommend them if you're killing her solo.
