yeah... still have to kill the damn wolf spider. a thing i cant do on my own.
Good luck :)
Edit:
Alternatively, if you don't want to cheese it like that, you can make a good old trap "Ark Survival style": Build a 2x2 set of windowed walls with a door and a stair leading into it from outside. Lure the spider in by the stair, and exit through the door. Shoot away once it is trapped, but move around so it doesn't wreck the walls too fast :)
Ranged combat in a game with enemies that are 99% melee, does that makes sense? Yes, some bugs have some sort of range, like the bombardier, orb spider, and infected mite. But overall they're melee. All difficulty would be thrown out the window if they made bows as damage efficient as melee weapons.
EDIT*, lemme update my this as im playing...the dev's have been listening and added, armor to buff bows, a passive that buffs bow dmg, and a new arrow made with crows feather that (not sure yet) deal more dmg.
What armor and weapon are you fighting ladybugs and spiders with?
wolfs are in fact easier than ever to kill now. now they are a joke.
to get the insect bow you need to defeat some bugs to get the recipe by analyzing theyre parts. thats also a problem early on when you dont have any good gear to get better stuff as you need to defeat lady bugs and bombard beetles to unlock the tier 2 tools.
in a game where you are trying to survive ranged combat is a far better alternative to going toe to claw with a giant bug that can one shot you especially in the early game. WHEN i get better weapons for melee sure i would.

It is, range is more times than not superior to melee in most any situations. But then i'd ask why are you going up against spiders, and lady bugs early game. It's like starting any other game and going straight to the end tier bosses. You should expect to get destroyed and it should not be easy.
It sounds like most people's complaints are being level 1 players dying to level 20 creatures. For the most part even the resources spiders and lady bugs give are useless for a while until you get other end tier resources. Also, sounds like your trying to skip the natural progression of the game; tier 0-1-2-3.
you know how to get the tier 2 axe right? you have to kill lady bugs and bombard beetles just to get the recipe for it. then you have to kill bombard beetles for parts to build said tier 2 axe. to get a lot of the tier 2 weapons you HAVE to start killing a lot of these big bugs to get the parts to build them.
They've also changed the Bombardiers AI and acid dmg. It deals less acid dmg and uses its acid attack every3-4 melee attacks...I've also noticed they now use their acid attack exclusively if you are 10cm away.
They've also changed the lady bugs attack AI, circle around hit, watch for their attack repeat. I also tried basic arrows only as they are still "recoverable." Use grass and other foliage to mess their attack animations then hit.
Ant clubs are also tier 2, and work well against lady bugs and spiders for its stun, and it doesnt need ladybug or spider materials! Also, suggest the larva blade over the spider one, has stun and marginally worse dmg wise.
So, 2 weapons (larva blade, ant club) great against spiders and ladybugs if you. Or even better. By pass all that...use said 2 weapons to go up against a bombadier to make the insect hammer. Break some mints then make a mint hammer.
Right now the most broken thing is, you can get to a tier 3 pretty easy before you get a tier 2 axe.
