had two wolf spiders attack my base on easy.. One glitched over the wall.. so I cheesed him to death, I built off the side of the mysterious device.. was a smart idea, I hid in one of the holes and stabbed.. man I stabbed a LOT too

There are a few things that you need to know before building a base. So far spiders avoid the starting area with the mytserios device. So building a base there is a good way to start. The very first foundation you can craft requires wood stems that you can get from dandelion. Problem right now is that smaller insects like ants and the larvas can bug under the foundation. The ants want food that are stored in your chests or baskets and they will get there even if you placed it on a foundation. it is a bit bugged right now because ants can even get there if you placed them behind a wall or something so you need to get the floor crafting from the robot and make a second floor. there you can put down your chests and avoid the ant bug. larvas are a bit tougher. dunno if the larva raids are bugged right now but sometimes a group of them come to your base and start to destroy it. finding clay is the way to go. there are some clay rocks in the starting area but you can get alot of them near the little ponds in the north west of the map. you can go there and avoid anything big. sometimes there are wolf spiders but not really often. clay foundations are way better because they are more durable and you can actually stack these foundations. right now i did not experience any larva raid except for the one that happens after i build my very first base without clay.

wolf spiders however are supposed to be the toughest enemies right now. but you can actually beat them rather easy and after you killed some of them you can craft really good equipment. to kill them in a good and harmless way is the following. craft a bow and gas arrows. ALOT of gas arrows. right now it appears that gas arrows stack so if you shoot multiple onto a spider the gas damage ticks for each arrow. go to the acorn tree. there is always 1 wolf spider that walks around. go to the big roots with the leafs ontop. they are near the east entrance of the tree, near the entrance of the laboratory. from there you should eventually see the wolf spiders. bring atleast 40 gas arrows. now you can shoot them. it will aggro the wolf spiders if you shoot it in the middle of the hole but they wont come to you because they are far away. you can see their hp bar. because they are so far away but still get the aggro from you they just stand still (sometimes the walk away but you can shoot arrows in the corner. the gas covers a really big area so you should hit them if you aim right. i takes about 15-20 arrows to kill a wolf spider. you dont even need to hit the arrow they will just die to the gas damage. if you killed atleast 2, you can craft the tier 2 bow and poison arrows that deal more damage over time than the gas arrow but dont release a cloud so you need to hit the target directly. that worked for me, i just need 20 arrows in my very first run to kill 2 of the spiders inside the hole under the tree and 10 arrows to kill the roaming one. they wont come to you because you are on the branches and they can not reach you. you can actually kill the orb weacers the same way. just jump ontop of the wodden logs and shoot gas arrows at them. you can 5 or 6 orb weavers with just 10-15 arrows because they are close to each other.

Agreed. I see people here commenting that they can solo them, and that's great for them, but I really feel that something that will one-shot you, from a distance, and follow you home if you manage to run away, should probably not be in the starter area.

If you can't manage perfect blocks you can also get up on something (rock, twigs, whatever) and just throw a pebble/spear or shoot an arrow at it and it'll run away and leave you alone for a while.
Or glitch out, in which case you can just throw pebble spears at it and be happy for free endgame resources. It's early access, some bugs are expected.

Try to craft an eyepatch and aphid slippers ASAP. Eyepatch gives a damage bonus which will help you chew through its health and the slippers increase your speed so you can actually get somewhere safe before the spider murders you.
Both are made from resources that are plentiful and easily available in the starting area.

Other than that you have to pay attention of course. If you notice the grass moving it's either a ladybug or a spider, time to get up on something and see which it is.

Also don't build your bases on the ground. If a spider doesn't destroy it the ants and larva raids will. Get up on something (the baseball right at the starting zone or the wood stumps around the pond are popular) and build there.

That's hardly a viable early game tactic. Gas arrows require stinkbug parts. "1 stinkbug kill per arrow" parts.
If someone's having trouble with a wolf spider at the start of the game they're unlikely to have stacks of gas sacks or the means to get them.

See above, you can chase them off (if their AI doesn't glitch out).
Other than that all i can say is that it's a survival game. Avoiding predators you can't kill yet is part of the game imo, and there are ways to do just that even day 1.

While i appreciate your videos, i'm not going to watch 3 hours of them, just to get an idea how to block a wolf spider.
The first video is fine...kind of, but it's also a bit hard to see/get a feel for when the exact time for a block is.

The attacks are really obviously telegraphed. The spider will rear back and hiss, then lunge forward to attack. To perfect block you block right as it finishes the "rear back" part.
The window is fairly generous so it's pretty easy to learn with a bit of practice.

Then you hit it once and get ready for its next attack (you won't get more than 1 hit safely, at least with the 2H clubs). When it's stunned you wail on it until your stamina runs out, then repeat the pattern until it dies.
You'll want to get right up into its face to make sure your attacks hit, but after that there is absolutely no need to move. Jumping around and circle strafing will just distract you.

Ride a ladybug, agro things to the ladybugs location, Ladybug doesn't like other insects and will get pissed. Standback and lay shots in from behind. The ladybug can take down 3-4 orb spiders solo or 2 wolf spiders simulataneously. A bonus if the ladybug dies you get mats you need for other things and killing a ladybug is more tiresome then trying to deal with spiders.

It's an early access...they will probably add way harder enemies until release, and probably every update will come with more weapons and armors, meaning that sooner than later you will probably kill wolf spiders like nothing.

yeah the second video linked was from a stream but i always include timestamps in the comments so you could skip to see only the wolf fights.

The montage video shows mostly orb weaver fights and at least 10 wolf fights but no timestamps included. It's mostly a source to watch just to at least see the perfect block being performed. Of course you will still need to practice in game to get the feel for it yourself.

Maybe even make a easy mode save for practice. otherwise death has no penalty minus time lost running back to your bag,or set respawn point to a lean to close to where you will be practcing fighting orb weavers or wolfs

While we're at it, have you ever fought multiple spiders or bugs at once? Not talking about "smaller" ones like ants and or larvae, but the bigger bugs and/or spiders?

At least yesterday, but also in between, i often come across these bigger bugs in pairs, which is a sight where i always start running the other direction again ^^

I haven't tried to get the aggro of one of them and try to fight my way thorugh, most of the time i'm exploring, so i don't want to die, as it's annoying to have to run back and forth all the time.

Would be interesting to know if there are tactics for multiple bigger enemies, or how to seperate them best at least.

The ants are way too aggressive to start out as well. I was barely started my first try at this game and I was still learning the basics and I got attacked and killed in my shelter with the computer in it. Yes the ants came right in and killed me. As far as the spider, perhaps I just had bad luck but he seemed to be patrolling right outside my little shelter with the computer and soon as I stuck my nose outside to try doing some exploring, he killed me. There should be a little grace period from the time you start playing your first time until insects can kill you.

Smoothies are the best thing for fighting the mobs insta heal a huge chunk of hp and realy easy to make a ton. They let you make a loooooooooot more mistakes fighting the spiders and other big guys.
