Which is stronger, the stem wall or the sturdy wall?
If I remember correctly, you unlock the stem wall naturally but you have to buy the sturdy wall with science. It seems like the bought one should be stronger, but its still made with grass and the stem wall is made entirely of stems.

Sturdy wall lasts longer. I'm more interested in the Palisade wall, but it costs 5000 research and i'm only half way there.

Sturdy wall is what you get in the 5000 defensive base package... The stem wall is the basic one. You would think the stem wall would be more durable than the sturdy wall, since the first is made mostly from stems and the sturdy one is a mix of stems and grass planks but no.

You are probably thinking of the pallisade wall, which is also stems (8 of them). However, this is an outer wall only, and does not snap to normal base building. Consider it a fence.

yes stem walls are tougher than sturdy and the 5k RS one is actual defensive perimeter walls not base walls

Both the sturdy wall and the pallisade (outer wall) are part of the 5k package though.

I took a few screenshots so we can avoid the confusion of what is what.

Here is the contents of the 5k fortified bases package:

Here is what the pallisade and pallisade gate looks like (5k package):

Here is what the sturdy wall and sturdy window wall looks like (5k package):

Here is what the stem wall, stem window wall and sturdy door looks like (basic unlock):

And here is the basic grass plank/clover leaf variants unlocked at the very beginning:

I think they probably made a mistake about the order in which we get things. I assume we should get all the grass plank versions by default (which we do except for the floor and stairs). Then we should probably unlock the sturdy wall set through analyzing/discovery. And finally, we should unlock the stem versions in the fortified package.

Personally i also think the grass plank floor and stairs should be default, and sturdy and stem versions of both through the path above.

But as usual, just a mix of my guesses and opinions.

So do we actually know for sure which is stronger? Or can we only speculate?
OndeTv Aug 2, 2020 @ 8:38am
I'll do some testing and post the results
Katala Swiftwind Aug 2, 2020 @ 8:38am
@OndeTv I totally agree with you. The order should go Grass Plank > Sturdy > Stem
OndeTv Aug 2, 2020 @ 8:56am
I made a small testbed with the 4 wall types in order of progression (grass plank, stem, sturdy/pallisade):
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2185464571

Then to test each of their strength, i used punches as that is the weakest form of damage we can inflict.

Grass plank wall, 20 punches:

Stem wall, 30 punches:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2185464670

Sturdy wall, 40 punches:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2185464725

Pallisade, 60 punches:

In other words, the wall durabilities match the current progression, even if stem walls look tougher than sturdy walls. Pallisade is by far the toughest, but do remember this is a fence only.

Nice work OndeTV thanks for doing the testing! I like the look of the study walls and think that should be in place of the normal plank walls imo
OndeTv Aug 2, 2020 @ 9:02am
Yeah, the sturdy walls both look better and are easier to build than the stem walls, so maybe that is the reason Obsidian chose to do it this way.

My guess is there will be a lot more material progression in the future though. There are several plants that currently can not be cut or has a name when looked at, as well as the usual survival game materials of wood and stone which we will probably also see at some point.

stupid question.
arrow in wall blueprint mean out- or indoor?
kirara209 Sep 2, 2020 @ 11:18am
By the looks of the grass wall, I'd say outdoor. But it probably doesn't matter, just visuals.
2ugly Sep 2, 2020 @ 12:51pm
All just gobblity ♥♥♥♥. Never had anything attack...after the patch. If they keep nerfng the scary stuff no defences will be necessary. We may wind up with a game battling only dandelions and weevils that sound like a pretty flute.

sadly you can't build more than one floor with the palisades, and there are some arbitrary limits as to how high you can build palisade walls around a palisade gate. i guess the devs never heard of stockades
