Is Xbox Live needed for singleplayer?
I get that you need it for multiplayer, but is it also required for singleplayer?

No it's not. You can enjoy the game alone!
Nope. You can play without Xbox for single player.
That's great to hear, thanks!
i don't see what the trouble is, its a free account you most likely already have if you log into microsoft outlook/hotmail/skype or even your windows profile

If you don't understand why someone might not want to have to log in with an account to play a singleplayer game, I don't know what to say.

I assume you're trolling, and this is just weak bait, but on the off-chance that your question is born of a legitimate desire to learn, I'm sorry, but this isn't the thread that will teach you about privacy concerns and corporate overreach.

Even if not concerned with privicy, one coudl ask themslef why they want you to make an account. Well ebcause its worth something to them to get those numbers. If they get market value from this, why would you still need to pay full price for the game? Asled the other way aroudn, why would yu be willing to pay them double?
Also a might-be concern: It takes time and clicks to make that "free" account. No idea what you get in an hour, but those 5-10 min would be pricy in my case. Giving my time is not as free as the account.
Third and last: I saw steam comeing up and we all hated the very idea; for years. Now with all the games beeing sold digital-only, the idea of haveing to go through multiple platforms is just an annoyance. It is just quality off life to have one platform to rule them all, if MS is not fine with giving vale a cut, they can stay on MS store - that desition would indeed be "free".

I hate to break it to you, but every company spies on you whether you believe it or not, and whether they deny it or not. It's simply in their nature to collect data on people, it's how they either improve their platform or get money by selling that data to advertisers and so on.

Apple, spies on you for sure. Android, spies on you for sure. Microsoft, spies on you for sure. Every company spies on you in some way. The only way to minimize companies spying on you is to use VPN's, but even then, you're not really hidden.

And if I was you I wouldn't be afraid of companies, they're not the scary part, the people watching you online without you knowing are. Anyone can or could've breached your privacy at any point. The internet is just the one place you can never be private on, sadly. But to answer your concern, Microsoft aka Windows aka Xbox for sure collects your data and they make sure you know it so you can either turn it off or on. Check your windows settings on your computer to customize that.

Of course, but it's all a matter of degrees. It's not a simple binary/black-and-white "do they or don't they".

Logging in to a game with a Microsoft account is certainly not the end of the world, but why do it if it's not necessary?

There is absolutely no legitimate reason why a singleplayer game would -require- you to log in to anything, but some do it anyway, as a form of DRM/analytics.

I asked if this one does; apparently it does not.

That is good.

That's all. Nothing more complicated than that.

I mean Xbox has always had you use an Xbox account with games they've published so this is not new at all. But in this case it's just another way to protect the game so they get more sales. Microsoft probably knows very well that it will be cracked eventually. But those first few days are crucial to many games.

Also your post is confusing, NO you don't need Xbox Live to play single player, but I believe you need an Xbox account to sign in, in order to play. I am not sure though, how ever, since I've been an Xbox gamer before so I already have my account connected to everything.

You can always buy the game and refund it if you don't like how they handle signing in. Or you can get Xbox Game Pass subscription for like 5$ and play a ton of games plus Grounded!

I've seen the requirement listed plenty of times, but I don't have any of those games, so I'm not sure how they implement it exactly.

This is the first time I care enough about one of those games to actually inform myself further.

Right, using logging in as a form of DRM, as I mentioned above. That falls under what I meant by "corporate overreach".

Now I'm the one that's confused... do you need Xbox Live to play singleplayer, or not?

If you need to sign in to play, that means you do.

I thought this thread was over and my question answered with what both you and Willow said, but now I'm not so sure anymore.

Buying it and refunding it sounds like an overly-complicated way to get an answer for what should be a pretty straightforward and simple question.

Yeah sorry mate, that's on me. I used to be a Xbox gamer before and we (my friend group) never referred to Xbox Live Gold as that, we always just called it Xbox Live. Which is why I thought that you thought that you needed to pay to play single player. Which you don't!

How ever, yes you do need an Xbox Live (account) to play this. It's listed on the store page.

As for the "corporate overreach". MANY games companies have various methods to protect them, Ubisoft has done it plenty of times and still do. Rockstar Games does and still do. It's not a corporate overreach at all, it's just Obsidian, Microsoft and it's investors protecting the game from getting cracked.

So yeah, it's quite common in this day and age that people use various ways to protect their games. Like DRM's and/or logging in in order to play. I know this sucks, but there's really nothing we can do about it. As for any spying, I'm still alive and free even though I've had some wild conspiracy theories through the years that I'm sure the NSA knows about with the help of games companies.

Jk of course ;)

Thank you for the clarification.

I'm aware it's listed on the store page, but that can't always be taken at face value.

Sometimes those listed requirements only apply to the online/multiplayer aspects of a game and not the offline/singleplayer aspects, which is why I made this thread.

That's true, it's quite hard to know what's what on the many store pages. How ever, I promise you that it's safe to get an Xbox Live account connected to steam. It's literally only an account, all it needs is an email adress and you're done. You can even make a random gmail adress and use that for the Xbox account, and hey, you can even use a fake name.

And if you're on a Windows 8 and/or 10 computer, then you already have many of Microsoft (Xbox) apps on your PC.
Yes, the solution is to make more accounts so you can make an account so you can use the game you paid money for.
