Not worth buying?
I don't see any reason to spend $50 on a rhythm game when you can get osu! for free which comes with 4 different rhythm games and one of them (osu!mania) is the same thing as this. I haven't played the game yet but even if there are some different features when compared to osu!mania, I just don't see how it would be worth buying.

TLDR: Price per song is cheaper than going to arcades and playing something there. Charts are keysounded perfection, but no way to disable keysounds. Can't customize the skins as much as free games, but available ones are still really good. Game includes obnoxious anti-cheat because obvious reasons. Purchasing helps devs and artists unlike free games. Get it if you want. Not going to force anyone. Please stop the flame wars. Sorry for the long post.

I think it's worth it even at full price. Here's how look at it. I'm lucky enough to have a Round 1 near by that has a hand full of Japanese rhythm games (SDVX, IIDX, WACCA, Guitadora, Groove Coaster, Crossbeats, Project Diva, Popin' Music, Museca, Dance Rush, DDR, PIU, ITG) and to play one round of 3 (4 depending on the game) songs depending on the game is about $1.50. So each song on average costs about $0.50. And i get nothing to show for it except an online profile with my scores. With 167 songs now in the base game that's just under $0.30 per song. Adding in the DLC bumps this number up a bit, but it's still less than $0.50 per song.

Now if you want to just compare it to what else is available on PC, yes there it the obvious answers of osu!mania, etternia, step mania, flash flash revolution (haven't seen this being brought up yet), O2Jam, Lunatic Rave 2, and a few others. There are also a few other paid games like Muse Dash, a Dance of Fire and Ice, Musynx, Groove Coaster, and even SDVX has a PC port (still requires you to purchase credits as if you were at an arcade) just to name a few. To be honest, i don't know where i was getting at with including these.

All of the charts in the free games have been created by community members and that can make finding good ones difficult. Some of the free games have rating systems for weather the chart is good or not and osu takes it a step further by having a dedicated loved section of charts. While i'm not a fan of all of the songs in DJMax, all of the charts just make sense to me. There is a clear note for every button you hit and that's more apparent when there are keysounds. There are a a couple that aren't keysounded, but still play fine. Not everyone likes keysounds as it makes learning the songs a but more difficult or not hitting notes perfectly will have the audio drop out. Unfortunately there is no way to disable this ti just let the song play, but if you still wanna learn the song you can listen to the song in the BGA viewer.

Most of the free games have extensive customization options, but learning to make your own can be daunting. The most i ever messed with personally was changing note colors in osu!mania to make it look more like DJMax Trilogy. The customization in DJMax only comes in a hand full of gear (what's around the notes), notes, and very few main menu themes. However most of these skins are animated and have some effect when hitting fever. The skins are very well done with themes from several of the songs and a few bare bones skins. There are also a few other DLC skins that look very nice, but they are way too expensive in my opinion. There are already nice options in the base game and i don't ever see myself purchasing any of these.

Now for the accuracy of actually hitting the notes. All of the free games have some sort of way to adjust and calibrate the offsets. In DJMax, there is only the "Adjust note output time" slider and i don't even know if this changes anything. There is no apparent option to adjust the sync. There are plenty of people complaining about this and even a few in the group of rhythm games i'm part of complain and refuse to play the PC version of the game. I'm fortunate enough to not have this issue, but i also have a 165 hz monitor dedicated to play rhythm games. With that, i don't have anything to offer as a solution for people with the issue. This is a problem with the game. I think i remember hearing somewhere that they can't put calibration in the game due to Konami, but i'm probably wrong.

Now for the anti-cheat. Oh boy... I don't know how to feel about this. In the past for DJMax Trilogy, the way they prevented their game from being pirated all over was to use a physical UBS key to allow the game to run. With the game being on steam, there is no way they could enforce something like that onto everyone. Next best thing is to put some form of anti-cheat to prevent the cheaters from having impossibly high scores. I don't know much about xingcode, but i wish it was a little more transparent as to what it does. Unfortunately if it did that, it could tip off to the cheaters what it's looking for and help them get around it and cheat some more. So it's a catch-22. I'm not a fan of having something on my computer that i don't know what it's doing, but i still play anyways. I personally haven't had any performance issue due to it, but have heard differently from others.

And lastly the songs themselves. The free games by default usually don't have any songs included with the games. Maybe a jungle on startup, background music for menus and sometimes an included song or two so there is something to play, but usually there isn't much or anything to play when you first download the games. This in itself is fine as long as the few included songs have the proper licenses. Now the legal grey area of the devs of the games hosting forums for people to share the songs with each other. This is where any one of these games could die at any moment. It's one thing to just share the charts for every song, but most of these game also share the song itself. This is practically the definition of piracy. If you don't care, well go ahead and play whatever you like. I like the idea of supporting developers and artists who are making content for a genre of games that i love. I'm definitely going to wait for sales and deals to get the most out of my money don't get me wrong, but i really like this genre of games and want to see more devs take on the genre in more interesting ways.

I'm usually not the type to argue over whether you should buy the game or not. It entirely depends on your situation. You are still in high school and don't want to waste money. I get it. I was the same growing up. I played tones of osu growing up as well as guitar hero and DDR on the PS2 (only with controller though). But once i found out about other rhythm games at conventions and eventually having a Round 1 opening up near me, i had to try them all out. If you don't get the game, it's fine. osu is a good alternative for may of the games at arcades that i loved growing up. Just try looking into the games that the different osu modes are based on.

Well the game will be free for a while why not try it out and see if it's something you enjoy enough to buy.

Osu!Mania is a cheap looking, cheap-feeling knock off of a rhythm game that plays like DJMax. DJMax is more than worth the $50 or whatever because unlike Osu!Mania, DJMax has tons of features and game modes that you would never get from a free game. I can't even begin to go on about all the content that DJMax has, otherwise this would be 6 paragraphs long.

Look into games before claiming they are the same thing as cheap knock-offs

Never said it was a cheap knockoff. I would like to hear what more the game actually has to offer though cause I'm not going to buy it. Osu!mania isn't cheap feeling in my opinion because you can add skins or even play osu!lazer to get higher quality. When the game goes free this weekend I will buy it and play it myself but as it is I can't see how it would be worth $50 for a rhythm game that is the same concept as a free one.

but it has that anime girl on the front. I don't understand why you wouldn't buy it based on this alone.

In osu!, all maps are community made so there are actually a lot of djmax songs (though I can't say they are mapped well :| ).

Don't know why you're trying to flame me in a steam thread. I'd rather you make an intelligible argument. And even if I had a job, I wouldn't waste $50 on a rhythm game that I can already play, hence the entire rest of the sentence that you ignored.

You can't already play it though, you can play a free cheap knock off. And I'm not trying to flame you, otherwise I would have just said "get a job" and ended it there like the other person. You are basically complaining about spending money that you don't even have because you don't have a job, which is what I have a problem with.

I definitely agree with this. Though they vary heavily, I still don't think it would be worth $50 because there are a TON of great beatmaps in osu! despite the bad ones which is part of why beatmaps can get qualified, ranked, and loved in osu!.
