The base game has a fair number of songs, but they went with almost surgical precision in choosing all the worst songs from older games to include in the base game while the ones you'd actually want are paid DLCs. And there's a lot of paid DLCs.
They also recently removed the series' longstanding Fever mechanic so they could rework the scoring and ranking, and introduced a new grading system where you get points for every song you clear towards an overall grade. Can you see how this is related to the paid DLC?
By the way, there are also paid season passes and associated grinding to unlock the content in them which goes away if you didn't buy at it the time. This is what DJ MAX is now, apparently.

Hard to recommend this one as the game just keeps asking for more money. Its ludicrously expensive for just a rhythm game when other options exist for far cheaper, or even free. The amount of DLC on top of a $55 CAD game is insane, and the DLCs are a minefield of soundtracks (that you don't play) or skins for your UI that cost up to $13 CAD (????)

I hope to find sales for the actual useful DLCs of up to 80% off or so so I can "find the fun" since I already paid this much, and I recommend that you don't be like me and just go play osu or something instead.

Also this is totally a subjective take but the base game music is just mediocre or bad. Probably a ploy to further get people in the DLC shop.
