This isn't a tip for now but for later, since understanding than some towers are better will help you in later difficulties, but that's something you will have to experiment later.
For now just play in whatever ways you prefer trying to unlock as most xp as possible for each tower, but remember that a single tower with 4 upgrades it's usually better than 10 at 0 upgrades. Quality over quantity. having a bazilion dart monkey is not a good strategy unless you go 0-4-0 and even then it's eh.
With position you did mostly good with the tack zones, having a glue monkey in the end doesn't help much. Something at the start to pop lead will help too.
If you want a easier time experiment with magic towers, they're really good at the start, expecially going ninja 4-0-1 and mage 0-2-2 since it's a pretty braindead strategy.
Won't tell more than this since understanding which towers you like more and when to not spend money is the best way to do.
Also a 0-2-4 Sniper is rather strong with large groups of bloons rushing in.
Those are good primary towers to play with. Outside that if you have the druid and wizard unlocked those are a few of the best towers to place. Middle path is always fun for the druid, and a 0-2-5 Necro is best tower in the game.
A heli-copter will carry you through most maps using top path + village + alchemist.
I’ll give it another go later and try to be more strategic.

Just don't get stuck on using one strategy or you'll never get the hang of the strengths/weaknesses of the other towers.
The main thing you're going to do is analyze your losses. What round specifically are you dying on? This game is prone to catastrophic fails. What I mean is you can think you're acing the game only to get destroyed in one bad round. Even though I've gotten a lot better this still happens to me. You can go on YouTube to find videos of the round you lost on and some explanations for what it happens.
That said, the biggest things I've learned are:
- Attack speed is king. You (usually) want to take any attack speed buffs.
- The attack speed buffs from the Alchemist are critical. Later, the Monkey Village Jungle Drums is also critical. They're basically like getting a whole extra copy of the towers they affect.
- It's usually better to have higher buffed towers than lots of tower. This plays into what I said above. Say you have a Sniper with 5 buffs and his attack speed gets doubled. Thats like having TWO Snipers with those buffs!
- I see someone already suggested this, but if you're ever completely unsure what to open with, place a Ninja first. Ninjas can see through camo without needing upgrades. If you buff him with an Alchemist, he can also destroy Lead. Take the buff that increases attack speed + range first, then piercing, then seeking missiles, then double hit. Level up to Bloonjitsu when you can.
- You're going to need to learn how to use Banana Farms or other farming techniques to increase your cash, especially for the later maps. Basically, a Banana Farm and its upgrades is an investment. If you can safely place one because you've got enough defenses for now, do it. (Learning when you're "safe enough is part of the strategy!) It takes 10-15 rounds to pay for itself. I'm not sure it's the "best" option, but I've been using 2-3-0 banks to make enormous cash, usually finishing Hard mode with 4 or more farms. There's a major learning curve to this, but if you master it you can afford those insanely costly Tier 5 upgrades that might feel out of reach right now. Don't forget if you hit a hard round or the end of the game you can sell those farms back to recoup the investment cash.
- A Sniper with Maim Moab (top row) can SOLO the level 40 MOAB Boss before it even leaves the entrance to the screen, if the Sniper has visiblity. It's not cheap, but using banana farms /banks can make it a lot more achievable. Especially useful on maps with very short paths to the exit or if you have to guard multiple entrances/exits. Make sure his targeting is set to Strong so he targets the biggest balloon. Later on you can also put Snipers near an exit with targeting set to Close to catch escaping fast moving MOABS.
- Wizard Monkeys around level 40 often save my bacon. The top path and bottom path are both excellent. Bottom path specifically is great at helping you survive round 63 on Hard, where you're overwhelmed with difficult balloons.
- Helicopter with razor rotors (top row) or a Ace Pilot with bottom row can hit stuff anywhere on screen.
- A well placed Glue Monkey can make or break a run. You'll want to watch some videos of how their powers work.
- I didn't understand early on that Snipers, Ace Pilots etc should be placed in range of buffing towers, not just anywhere on screen. Same with boats, where applicable.
- When I started doing Hard mode, I found that using Benjamin made them easiest, because of the tons of cash he generates and the fact that after a certain level he gives you 5 health back per round. Not sure he's the best for all players, but it helped me a lot. He did require an unlock with Monkey Money though.
- For the longest I didn't understand that "active ability" icons show up at the bottom of the screen. Click them to execute special powers. A few are really useful, like Jones' MOAB stun.
- RE: Monkey Knowledge, beeline the node on the far left of the Magic tree that provides bonus Monkey Money per win. in the Primary tree, work towards the reward that gives a free Glue Monkey, Dart Monkey and then $200 starting cash. (It may be worth looking for a detailed guide of the recommended order to unlock).
- Don't worry too much about dying early on. It's going to happen a lot until you learn the game.
