Bronze Map Bordering: Obtained by completing all Easy difficulty medals.
Silver Map Bordering: Obtained by completing all Easy and Medium difficulty medals.
Gold Map Bordering: Obtained by completing all Easy, Medium and Hard difficulty medals, however, if you fail a CHIMPS, you will not receive the black border which is done by completing the whole CHIMPS without failing, not even once.
Black Bordering: Obtained by completing all Easy, Medium and Hard difficulty medals.
So always remember, gold border is every medal done except if you fail your CHIMPS and you restart and succeed afterwards. A black border is done by completing EVERY medal, Easy, Medium and Hard including CHIMPS. But you must not fail on CHIMPS, otherwise that's a Gold Border and not a Black border.
You can also complete all the same medals but in co-op to get a 2nd row of medals.
I hope this information helps.

You can still get a black chimps medal after losing a run, you will just need to restart the whole run. You receive a red medal for using the new "retry last round" feature in chimps or simulating it by backing out of the game mid-round.
Thank you for correcting me. I completely forgot about the red medal feature.
So, you have completed all other difficulties?
