Otherwise it is basically buying MK or grinding XP. For XP grinding, play rounds 1-100 every time. Later rounds will give more XP until 101. At that point XP gain is nerfed substantially.
Edit (based on SandTag's comment below): You could go for the achievement for fortified/MOAB pops for one extra MK, but that requires super late game to make good progress so you'd probably want to do it in conjunction with SandTag's suggestion. Otherwise it is a huge grind that is less efficient than grinding levels.
Obyn first, then 4-0-2 ninja in his radius, more toward the back of the track, 4-0-0 alchemist (don't waste money on other paths, just the top) on ninja, finish making the ninja 5-0-2, 2-0-5 spike factory at exit, set to close, buff with 4-0-0 alchemist, 5-0-2 Wizard in Obyn's radius and toward front of track buffed with 4-0-0 alchemist. 2-2-0 village in range of Wizard, Obyn, and Ninja. Basically Obyn and the village should side by side so they cover the same area as much as possible.
You don't need MIB on the Town Center with this setup. Don't waste money on it in CHIMPS (thought it is fine in other modes assuming you have more budget due to farms and such).
You can vary that slightly, but those are my key players. Adjust your build order according to the needs of the track. On some tracks Spike Factory won't work, but I'll explain that later.
After that I usually put a 0-3/4-2 Ice Tower (3 is most important, 4 if you can make it) and a 2-0-3 Super monkey in the same radius as Obyn and the village. This is more flexible though as long as you are slowing things down. These don't need alchemists.
Variation: When Spike Factory doesn't work well, replace it with a 0-2-4 bomb tower buffed with a 4-0-0 alchemist. Keep the bomb tower in the radius of both Obyn and village. Replace Ice Tower and Super Monkey with a 0-2-4 Glue Gunner (if budget allows, it can be 0-2-5 but I can't remember if it allows). Glue gunner doesn't need alchemist but does need to be at the front of the track while still being in Obyn's/village's radius.
Ive found each level caps the maximum knowlage you can aquire to 2 per map.
Generally, when you are playing a level, youll gain 1 knowlage.
If you go into free mode after you win, you can get 1 more.
After that, you gain no more exp/money/knowlage.
(Play tested and confirmed information)
Freeplay doesn't start on a lot of gamemodes until round 100, pretty sure it's just the 10% for all of freeplay, could you give a source?
Yeah, I'm only on 79 or 80 and it takes at least 2 games to level up, that is a lot for me.
after round 80 ramping starts and super ceramics replace normal ones
so their is 2 types of freeplay, one after pressing the freeplay button after you beat a map and after round 80
