Do monkey's stop gaining exp after so many rounds?

Just got this super monkey, 270 exp, round 140...

What gives? Hasn't gained for like 20 rounds+.

Also is there a real benefit to freeplay?

the benefit? lag and also 2 more insta monkeys.
but mainly to brag at your friends on how good you are at the game.

Exp gained is divided into each type used, via their relative total cost to total cost of all towers. You gain less exp in freeplay, but its not necessarily bad for a while. Freeplay doesn't have many benefits. For the most part, its just there for you to see how far you can push.

you get an insta at every 100th round. Its better to just spam r100 if that is your goal.

Exp gain is reduced during free play. If you want to level up your monkeys, do Impoppable or Deflation on expert maps. Impoppable is really good in general so having multiple monkey types is better while Deflation is only good exp if you use a single monkey tower type, so only super monkeys, only snipers, etc...

As for benefits, it's for fun. I'm not aware of any leaderboards but the idea is to just hold on until the bloons overwhelm you and see how long you can go. It allows you to see several of the tier 5 towers you'd never see in a regular late-game match as well as the ability to get those high-level paragons.

If you want a good taste of free play with actual benefits, go for bosses. They both follow the same idea of needing to go for the expensive towers but here you actually get rewarded.

Freeplay is really just to see how far you can go, though I think you do get some insta-monkeys after going past certain rounds.
Not really worth it imo, the later rounds are painfully long, you can go on virtually forever but honestly I really don't think most people would bother going more than 200

Impoppable is when you complete the Hard Mode and then Alternate Bloons Rounds of a map. The reason it gives great exp is because it goes to round 100. Monkey Knowledge and farms are also enabled, unlike CHIMPS. Life stays at 1, everything cost more, and the bloons at rounds 81+ will have free-play rules so every round they will get faster and tougher. It is a challenge but if you know a map well and start farms as early as possible, it'll be easier. Doing this on Expert maps is better as experience gained is higher on those, but beginner maps can work.

Deflation is when you complete the Easy Mode and then Primary-Only of a map. You basically get 21k gold right at the start but you can't earn any more money. It starts at round 31 and ends at 60. The reason it's great for single monkey types if you can just place them down and then go afk, rinse and repeat.

Boss Rush isn't always a thing, you'll see a special bloon icon to the top-right of the main menu, right now it's Lych (purple colour) and it is really difficult. If you haven't done even one impoppable, I wouldn't recommend doing bosses yet lol.

Honestly, if you want to earn exp without grinding, just play new modes of a map and place down the monkey towers you want to level and don't do free play. I haven't had to grind for levels ever and the only upgrade I need is third path tier 5 of the dartling gunner. But just playing and using the gunner will give it to me eventually.

Try them out :) A lot of modes really push your knowledge and skill.

xp rewards for monkeys is greatly reduced on rounds 81+ because of super ceramics (ceramic bloons and below only spawn 1 of each tier below, also increased ceram hp)
this reduces the total pops per round and also the total xp per round by a significant amount.
