Is the double cash mode paid only?

Btd6 is waaay better than 5, playing the older one just because you can't play free double cash mode is a terrible reason. You really don't need it either, the hardest medal to get on every map is chimps which would disable it anyways. For normal games though, you can still get huge amounts of cash with farms and buccaneers.

I can get the game for 7 bucks in my currency. But the double cash mode is 70 bucks. It's pretty jarring.

A cheat that used to be achievable. It's just like poweroverwhelming in SC. Something iconic.

I get what you mean, something that used to be free that's now paid seems kinda unfair, but I used to always use double cash mode in btd5 and after getting to btd6, I don't really miss it. It makes difficult maps easier than they should be, but at the same time, you can still make a huge amount of money in even just 80 rounds if you play right.

I think everything new and improved about this game far outweighs any downsides.
