Honorable mention to 3/2/0 buccaneer, because with a 2/2 village backing it up it can almost solo the map In The Loop on hard (I had a spactory on the long stretch of exit straightaway so bloons wouldn't hit it until they had almost completed the track, and it only had 2.3k pops or so when I passed wave 80).
It's cost for value is unmatched for buffing other good towers.
Small bloons are where most of the gimmicks are found, but once you work through those gimmicks they aren't very threatening. A specter with some source of camo detection is my favored tower here due to a combination of good damage, full-map coverage, and the ability to work through all gimmicks.
M.O.A.B.s are mostly gimmickless, but have high health, can be quite fast, and eventually come in large numbers. My favored answer, though expensive, is a buffed up Superstorm. It's the next best thing to a hard counter to anything vulnerable to crowd control, and I've had it stop D.D.T.s that spawned nearly on top of the exit.
Finally, B.A.D.s, which are immune to any crowd control, and so prompt the obvious answer of 'just bring a Sun God and buff it', which is an answer so obvious that it pushes the 4-- and 5-- super monkey to being my least favorite tower, and which leads me to my overall favorite tower: the Monkey Bank.
More money allows for more towers, and opens up more room to try new things. Without them, I'd likely not be able to find the hilarity of an overclocked, homeland defense'd super mine, or the sheer power of a properly buffed superstorm.
