Looking forward buying this, is it pay to win?
Do you need to grind too much in this game?

No?

The ultimate challenge mode (CHIMPS) prevents the use of powers, double cash, monkey knowledge and anything else you can buy to help you.

So the game isn't like some freemium mobile games?

I mean, it takes a while to get all the Monkey Knowledge, but it's not like you need it. And buying Double Cash is just spoiling the game for yourself.

It is and it isn't, there are a ton of microtransactions but they are all optional. Its not a one time buy and its all yours sort of game though and its understandable if that would make you not want to buy it.

It kinda is but kinda isn't at the same time. You can pay money to get things like heros, hero skins, monkey knowledge and powers but you can also get those same things without spending any money (apart from the money you spend to actually buy the game of course)
so no, it is not pay to win

No. Everything in the game can be beaten without spending a cent on anything other than the game itself.

The game is just about grinding.

If you can skip the grind, get a bonus normal players can't and spam powers other people would have to grind for, that is the definition of pay to win.
Skip the grind... how? Yeah, you can buy Monkey Knowledge and Monkey Money, but you still have to like... play the game. You can't buy medals which is the bulk of the gameplay for most people. And with your other two examples, Powers and Double Cash, is it really pay to win if they don't actually make the game any easier? Since they're pointless in the only mode that matters™, they don't matter.
You can pay to win, but that doesn't make the game pay to win. I think this is a case where connotation is more useful for a definition than denotation.

Also - by the time you understand the game to do impoppable, half cash, double moab, magic only, 'hard mode', alternate, and chimps - you will likely only need 1 power being 'cash drops' which you cannot use during chimps anyway and 'chimps' is viewed as the only "cool" thing to do in the game worthy of respect.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I saw that game was on sale for 80 cents, so I'll wait for lunar sale i guess..

It is definitely worth 80 cents when it goes on sale next. The developers update the game with new maps, modes and heroes at a pretty regular basis. Hope to see you bloon hunting in the future!

To be competitive on this game, you either get those coveted CHIMPS medal or get ranked in the race.

CHIMPS mode doesn't allow you to use anything you can buy with with real cash or monkey money.

And then there is the race. You will need lots of monkey money to make a lot of tries on the race. Monkey knowledge is also needed to get a little bit of edge. What does the race gets you? Getting into top 50 yields 450 monkey money 30 trophies, a cash drop powerup and a random tier 3 insta monkey. To get into top 50, you will be spending at a minimum 40K monkey money. Therefore, the race requires skill and very deep understanding of the game, things no amount of money can buy?

Is the race worth even botheeing with? For casuals, thats a NO. But for veteran players, definitely a YES, getting those race medals is simply for bragging rights.

In conclusion, is this a pay to win? It depends on what you want to achieve on this game.

it is worth a dollar. Not 10 dollars.

It is only pay to win if you make it that way. The grind is there but is very easy as the game rewards you with a lot of the ingame currency (monkey money). Imo it's actually rewarding too much currency which makes it even easier to avoid the microtransactions.

I didn't say that, but if I HAD paid 10 dollars for this game, I'd be fine with that. I've put a few hundred hours into the game (albeit a chunk of that is idle time as I walk away and let the game run for awhile). I do believe the game is worthy of someone throwing a dollar at it; with the amount of sales that are on Steam, I don't see why anyone wouldn't wait for a sale since this regularly goes on sale. Of course, I tend to be a cheapskate! :RogueMoneybags:
