For TD-based, Kingdom Rush series are my favorite, but it's much more challenging and you obviously can't play while afk.

Try gemcraft. Its got some unique and slightly confusing tower upgrading mechanics, but the RTS aspect isn't as blatant until you really get the hang of it. Its a good stepping stone for incorperating rts into TD type games in general and managing wave manipulation.
----[Variation]----
BTD6 is not your random TD games that is easy to play. It is more like towers are heavily revised to encourage a healthy gameplay, rather than using what is believed as the best and developing an ugly "META elitism" in the community. Yes, we have Most Effective Tactics Available in this game, but this is also asking for balance change on those since initial release of this game.
We already got up to version 22, which currently works on new tower, Dartling that also solve Freeplay lag issues such as slow but powerful MOAB destroyer, MAD. And tuning down powerful MOAB staller, such as the well known MOAB Press and Glue.
But does that make BTD6 harder? Nope. It's just even more fun to play as things like MOAB Shove with Bigger Jet and MOAB Maim's Sharpnel get better in same patch, as new ways to stall MOAB in harder modes like CHIMPS. When the game balance gets better, it becomes less punishing for choosing less appealing tactics, which is why the game looks easier on the paper.
Most TD games do not encourage variation and not pushing balancing as what BTD6 did.
----[Control]----
I have touched Kingdom Rush series, it feels weird and frustrating to play because I do not have enough player control, such as asking a spellcasting Hero stop wasting all spells to overkill just a weak enemy. It sounds nothing to casual players, but it does contribute to a successful run, just because they can't cast the crucial spell on an elite enemy!
Most TD games that is in current market still using the old "Target First enemy" priority system. Some players find it as a charm, but this also made less variety of strategy can be implemented, such as using abilities with long cooldown but powerful, like "Sniper" class tower. It is obviously harder due to lack of direct control on battlefield.
I am not saying it is bad, it's just that I had enough of it.
----[Action TD games]----
Orc Must Die franchise is one of the few games that break the tradition of TD is by allowing players actually engage in combat as a character. Dungeon Defender as well.
Unchained was the highest peak of the franchise not because it introduced the hated PVP mode, but because it has large amount of Heroes that encourage the variation of strategy. Every hero has different playstyle, can choose different skill tree, pick different traps with different modifications on various maps with various enemies. The Orc Must Die 3 not so hyped because it broke the "variation" concept.
Dungeon Defenders 2 on the other hand is just lack of balancing, with awful coop experience. I could just swap a character built for max defense Barrier, swap another one with max offense towers, and swap to action focused character. It sounds fun, but feel boring, repetitive and awkward.
I am aware that there is Dungeon Defenders: Awakened, but I have lost interest to this genre due to OMD Unchained server shut down. (Can still play in Single)
----[My Recommendation?]----
I don't devote myself to enjoy another TD other than BTD6 because I'm "old". Though it never hurts to try others like Tower Madness 2, Fieldrunners 2, Last Hope TD, Legion TD2, custom maps from Warcraft 3/Dota 2, Elements TD, etc.
But if you sense an unhealthy grind, I suggest you give up asap:
- Prime World Defender 2: Unhealthy grind and requires you spam waves with active Premium
- Plants vs Zombies 2: EA ruined it with a lot of Premium plants, insane level, and Plants level system. It is challenging but not always fair, quit if you feel uncomfortable.
It is story driven and allows for building your own lanes the enemy has to use (among lots of other features ofc).
Also OTTTD comes into mind (centered around heroes), Sanctum 2 if you prefer a first person shooter (coop) implementation, maybe Defence Zone 3 (but that's listed just for reference).
dont know if its afkish just like bloons td6
I have to stress this out, Bloons TD6 is not an old school TD. Most old school TD is all just about use splash-attack tower hit minor enemies, single-focused tower on major, plus some boost/slow, and occasionally specialized tower for specific situation. If you never played a lot of TD during years ago, it never hurts to try.
But they aren't designed to be afkish or fun to play after certain hours, because most of them lack of 2 important features that I said.
You can make your own paths with defense grid, and iron brigade is a 3rd person TD and can place 4 towers at a time, have 2 to 4 weapons, and is 4 player coop. I had a huge blast on Iron Brigade.
wrong game to suggest in a tower defense genre
