There's a fox spirit pet, but there aren't any fox Yaoguai.

The only humanoid animals so far are : Tiger, Cat, Bull, Frog, Turtle, Bear, Boar, Snake, Wolf, Chicken, Rabbit, and with the DLC, Panda.

No idea if they'll add more in the future.

Also want kitsune here as well. And I have yet to see how to get the spirit pets, do you have any advice on how to manage that? I've managed to build a sect, but not to golden core yet on any of my people. I'm assuming its a good ways off before I can get the fox spirit pet?

The game is based on Chinese mythology.

I believe Kitsune are specifically a Japanese thing?
Shard Nov 26, 2020 @ 2:49pm
True, though there are Chinese versions as well, and several others. I forget the proper term for the region, it is not as popular here in the west as the term kitsune, but in general, foxes, monster foxes, and foxes that become humans.

Yeah, I know about them but am also blanking on the name as well.

If I'm not mistaken, they're also supposed to be extraordinarily violent, compared to their Japanese counterparts. They are especially fond of slaughtering anybody who tries to lewd them.

;-)

That would be the Korean version, IIRC. Chinese were more like people, from what I recall. Japanese were mixtures of tricksters and divine servants. Korean were more "Yum, humans!" with much flesh tearing going on.

(Edited to avoid double-posting: Looked up the name since I couldn't recall, Huli Jing according to wiki)

I hope the game continues to be shaped by chinese stories not western views of them. It's good the game has things that arent in other media so is educational for westerners and instead of being shaped by what westerners already know and defined by being for them?

Theres probably a mod for it in the workshop, at the worst it doesn't seem like a hard thing to mod.

Nope, it's originally a Chinese thing. Especially in the case of 9 tailed foxes which first appeared in a text known as the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" which was compiled sometime between 4th BC to 1st AD.

The most famous depiction of a fox spirit in Chinese culture appears in the "Investiture of the Gods" (Fengshen Yanyi) which was written during the Ming Dynasty, you find that one of the main villains is a thousand year old fox spirit (qian nian hu li jing) named Daji. Noting that Daji was originally a servant of the goddess Guanyin, but (Daji) later became evil.

In fact, fox spirits in Chinese culture tend towards being beautiful, but cunning seductresses who can even use charm spells on people. This is pretty much why "hu li jing" is something that is used as an insult in certain (possibly period?) dramas for characters that have that sort of disposition.

They DO however fit in modern Chinese wuxia and xianxia webnovel culture where they can still be depicted based on their more historical interpretations, but they are also often depicted highly intelligent beings that often have beauty that leads to their clans being subjugated by stronger powers... in such webnovels, the fox spirits are normally charming and loyal friends/lovers of the main character.

The Japanese depiction of fox spirits is very different. Kitsune are traditionally servants of the Shinto god of rice, Inari. But kitsune themselves can also be worshiped as kami.

But... there is also the depiction of kitsune as being tricksters... and sometimes also as being malicious beings.

One of the most famous of kitsune depictions in Japanese culture is that of Abe no Seimei's mother - Kuzunoha. In a more modern manga depiction (in Nurarihyon no Mago), Kuzunoha is depicted as (sort of... no spoilers) being Daji (refer back to the Chinese portion of this answer).

Okay... history lesson aside... lol...
Huli jing / kitsune / kumiho / ho ly tinh are pretty much the same and features in 4 North East Asian countries. From a historical and even more so in a modern perspective, they fit in perfectly in the game. If they appear in the game, expect it to have high charisma, social and magic stats. Although I won't bet on it appearing.

Thank you very much for the information, Aedrith, some of that is new to me and I always enjoy learning more about the lovely fluffy fellows, regardless of which particular mythology they are from.

Hopefully we can see them in the game at some point, I really want to make a full sect of nothing but foxes. And I'd agree, likely to be high cha, social, magic, as those are mentioned in every myth I've ever heard about any of the variants.

I would love to have a fox clan too! ++

Bit of an understatement. She's linked with the historical(?) concubine of the last king of the Shang Dynasty, and is claimed to have seduced the king into committing actions that were so depraved that they essentially pushed all of (then) China into rebellion against him in sheer horror and disgust.

Odd that they'd link her with Kuzunoha, since the Japanese more traditionally link Daji to Tamamo-no-mae, a favored concubine of Emperor Toba. She is believed to have made the Emperor ill, and was chased down and killed after she was discovered. Her spirit was then imprisoned beneath a stone.

In appearance and abilities, yes. In actions, though, the Korean Kumiho are *always* malevolent... outside of K-dramas, of course.
