Item shop lock pick

Does anyone know the benefit of buying the lock pick and bolt cutters from the item shop? I know it means you'd have them immediately after getting to the subway, but it doesn't take that long to get them anyway. Does Carlos get them in the hospital then? Can he open those boxes that are meant for Jill?

I guess starting with them would also save you some time backtracking later, but is it enough to make the difference between an S and A ranking? Even on the higher difficulties?

Store lockpick isn't available for Carlos, having bolt cutter and lockpick from the beginning is nice, especially on nightmare, so you can immediatly collect more resources and get the shotgun earlier.
Having those items from the beginning doesn't prevent you to get an S.
