Is knife underpowered?
I feel it takes like 10 slashes to kill a downed zombie on normal.

I could rarely get them to stay down with it before they deadlocked me. Might save like 1 bullet here and there. But with all the ammo this game throws at you the knife is the least of my concern for balance. Unless you're supposed to be doing something else. But resident evil 2 remakes method wasn't working for me especially with limb breaks being out of the picture.

It takes the same amount as in RE2. But in RE3 you can't cut off their limbs like in RE2.

Knife was meant to be underpowered. It is only good for breaking crates, checking playing dead zombies, and literally knifing it to death. By the time I reached the hospital, the knife is pretty much a waste of space in Jill's inventory, although not for Carlos due to his punches that can knock enemies down if timed perfectly.

Not only that, but RE3 zombies seemed to recover from getting knifed easier than RE2. In RE2, you can literally stunlock a downed zombie by just knifing it constantly until death. In RE3, zombie doesn't get stunlocked and you might get grabbed if you are knifing when it is on its knees

In addition, compared to RE2's knife, RE3's knife are more useless since you cannot use it to escape grapples, but i guess it was made up for it not being a 'consumable' item and having the characters being able to take more hits. (On normal difficulty, RE2 took three zombie bites to kill, five in RE3)

Suffice to say, it narrowed down to this. Knife is eventually useless as the game goes on.

Use the knife in the Store if you want a good knife. The basic knife is not practical.

The knife in RE2 is much stronger than the knife in RE3.

The knife is the only closest thing to the original lolol
It was 10 slashes in the original RE3 too, but the zombies wouldnt ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deadlock you so often and so easily so it felt more balanced. I basically only knife after dodges or if I can read the animation, you can tell when they snap into attack animations most of the time, except for the bait walk into insta attack they do sometimes.

Not really. RE2 you can cut off limbs, in RE3 you can't. That's the main difference between two.

In RE2 you can kill bosses under a minute with the knife because of how much damage it does since it's tied to FPS.

Actually, you can

Yea, it's kinda underpowered, but, as you may remember, in RE2: Remake a knife was breaking, right? So IMAO this is the key thing why the damage is so low comparing to RE2: Remake.

That's what I thought. Since the knife was tied to fps, I guess they made it more static now and got rid of those ties. But I suppose it should get patched, the game is more dynamic in comparison to the original and even to RE2 remake, so it is safe to say that the knife should get buffed a bit to fit the quota.

Have you ever seen an RE2R speedrun? You can kill anything with the knife in seconds.

You can permastagger lickers in RE2 with the knife. That's how good the knife is in that game. And it feels great.

They probably won't since the flame knife from shop already acts as a buffed version, being capable of killing a zombie in one perfect dodge or so.
