The process is the same as going from T1->T2.
Go to area 3 and you'll find T3 ships and loot around. Stay in area 2 and you'll at best only find T2 ships. (Yes, this means you have to destroy the 2nd laser device first. The same process you did to get to area 2.)
The only thing that can trip people up is the obtuse decision by the devs to make T3 recipes only craftable in the hubs, so even if you unlock the T3 refinery/science modules, you won't see them in stations and need to craft them from hubs.
Note: Tunnels are not areas. (It comes up often.) Areas are like pie slices of the island and there's a laser device in each one.
If you truly are in area 3, then ships will spawn in roughly two big groups: Once after the eruption, and then about half-way through it. Check all the landing spots after those spawn waves and there will be at least one research ship there.
The various spots on the travel maps where pickups spawn are almost guaranteed to contain destroyed T3 sci modules and analyzers somewhere, which you can turn into intel.
By the way, I was getting T3 ships but never T3 Research ships.
