But yeah, i agree, games in this state shouldn't be sold anywhere, and the devs (or whoever has the IP) should be forced by law to fix the product they sell.
It's illegal to sell anything that's broken anywhere, why this is ok for games is beyond me.
Good game though. I'll check out xenia, heard great things about it.
I also checking out Xenia.
Sometimes it crashes a lot, sometimes i can play for a while before it crashes, but yeah... It's crashing.
The only crashing fix i actually fixed in this game was when the first Ultor mission kept crashing at random points and wouldn't let me progress. Switching to the easy difficulty did the trick, as it seems the game was spawning way too many roadblocks (there were constant police roadblocks one after another in that mission), so it might have been some sort of memory leak. Game kept spawning roadblocks, but not despawning them causing a crash.
Switching to easy made this go away.
But - for this crash, i have no idea how to fix.
There's a few threads i found, but none of that helps me.
This one suggests either limiting the fps to 30 (no thanks), or removing the nude mod (which i don't have):
https://www.reddit.com/r/SaintsRow/comments/yx95kd/saints_row_2_inevitable_crash_when_entering_any/
This one mentions some power tools to adjust timing whatever that is, or windowed mode like Half-Vampire suggested. I'll definitely try windowed mode if i can make it work properly.

There's some others but nothing too useful.
So it's either 30 FPS (which should theoretically be possible with gamescope, but the game won't start when i limit the FPS to 30) or windowed mode. I'll try windowed mode later.
I tried using gamescope to make the game borderless. But that made gamescope just do what gamescope does best and that's take about 20 FPS off the game and make the FPS unstable as hell.
Turns out i didn't need it because just making the game not fullscreen (fullscreen: no), doesn't actually make a window border for some reason. At least on Xfce4. Maybe it's different in other environments.
But... That seemed to have done the trick, at least partially. The game seemed much more stable, and i only crashed once in an hour or so.
I was also curious about what that thread said and installed the GOTR nude mod to remove the pixelation. The game then crashed twice in a row immediately when entering a vehicle, but the third time i started it, i was able to play for a while, so it might have been random, but maybe the nude mod does contribute to instability.
For me, the fix was lowering the difficulty so that the game spawns less of them. They don't seem to despawn like other cars i think, that's why it crashes, the game doesn't unload them.
My guess at least, cause having the game spawn less of them was what made it stable.
I'll see how it behaves when i get to that mission again.
Nice! Linux was about the only platform i was able to play this on lol, on Windows it was unstable even more. I had to install DXVK there anyway to get decent FPS, so this isn't that different. I had to build GOTR and resolution patch on the windows install though, but it's fine after.
I'm using Proton-GE-8.16 or something like that, so yeah, 8 does seem to work. Previous ones didn't at all.
What's the eON port?
And yeah, the cutscenes seem wonky (and audio gets too loud compared to the rest of the game), but i'm fine with it.
The FPS is super unstable constantly though lol, but that's just how it is i guess.
And the game is normal speed, the vehicles handle ok as far as i'm concerned, so yeah, no speed glitches or anything.
But yeah, that one never managed to run on my system. It crashed on startup, so i had to use proton.
I wish someone would fix or remake this game, it's a damn shame it's in this state.
But Volition had to do a reboot and die because of it. Nevermind remaking the best game in the series.
Oh what could have been. :(
The least they could do is release the source code.
I currently playing the game via Xenia Canary, and it's a much better experience.

Check this video out, everything you need to know on how to run Saints Row 2 along with it's DLC and even Saints Row 1 is in that video and the description. This dude is a blessing to the Saints Row community every since we lost IdolNinja.
Don't worry about it much, we already bought the game fair and square, a broken one, on Steam. So it's only fair that we get to experience the game in a proper way, right?
But i already finished the game now, so i won't be playing yet again, but on xenia.
Still, when i do want to play again, i'll give xenia a try. By then it will probably get even better.
Ah, in that case, when i do want to play again, xenia might be further along on linux. :)
For now, i finished the game, again, won't be playing it any time soon, don't want to overdo it haha.
I have Saints Row the Third Remastered on Epic that i want to play, though, from trying it out, that one also has tons of bugs. Vehicle audio is extremely low, and desynced to your driving and seems unstable a bit, but it's playable, and locking it to 60FPS seems to lessen the vehicle driving audio desync so i'll try it out.
