Anyway, 3 archers (probably even 2), is enough to survive the first night. Spearmen have their uses but archers are the quintessential military unit in this game so focus on those and use the villagers with damage perks to make them. If you just keep making every damage perk villager into an archer, you should have enough throughout the game. Just make sure you keep a good flow of villagers into your village and gather gold to upgrade your pop cap as fast as you can. It helps to make more than one Tavern, as this increases the influx of villagers, which lets you grow your eco and army much faster.
I have a YouTube series up of a Veteran playthrough, if you find you want a detailed, visual guide. Though encourage you to do your best on your own first, as the greatest enjoyment from this genre comes from experimenting and figuring out your own solutions to the challenges ;) The channel is "catbert7's Gaming Highlights"
Don't kill it. Send out a single villager as soon as Mergle arrives, so that the villager meets Mergle out in the open away from your town. Mergle will eat him, and then leave a few seconds later.
But if you want to be good (not necessary successful) leader - it kills itself pretty effectively with lots of wooden spikes.
Caspar people give up on their YouTube channels, because YouTube sucks more and more, I did too. And Calbert did that probably also.
