The thing is I doubt user command during a game is synchronized by a central server (since there is a user "host"). If true, then it might be that they are limited to checks within the local client. So anyone can use a packet sniffer that's freely available to investigate the commands that are sent and received while the game is running and find out what they represent, and then even use it to falsify commands. And the only thing Innersloth might do is to make checks within the game running on the player's computer. For example, it could disconnect a player if a certain command is illegal under a particular game state. But since these checks would be running in the player's computer as opposed to a server, there would always be ways around it.

I think Innersloth should implement checks on players and ban them if out-of-order or illegal commands are too prevalent to be chalked up to a bug. From a cursory look online, it doesn't even seem like they are doing that. They probably don't want to deal with the extra support they'd have to give for players writing in to whine about being banned.

Hacker in my last lobby was able to change name, color and outfit mid-game, as if randomized. Made it impossible to figure out who was doing it.

Are you sure this one was a hacker? There is an open bug ticket about this being a server glitch
