You don't need a headset, the game has a built in chat system. Plus it has no built in voice channels, the only reason you'd ever hear someone's voice is if you joined a discord with them.
you can play with randoms, but should you? I wouldnt no. Half the time non english speakers are in the english servers who boot you out instantly for not speaking their language

It is fun with friends but for the actual online with randoms part is a mixed bag. Typically out of twenty matches I play before I stop. Only four of them were "enjoyable". Those four matches were packed with smart plays and very good liars, well one of the matches was just people messing around and doing a rp type thing almost like how Town Of Salem pulls off except with more killing than comedy because the chat system is only active during a conversation and being dead.

Random is painful. There's a high chance you'll have at least one person who tosses around baseless accusations (bonus points if they talk like an 11 year old who just discovered edgy memes, respond to people pointing out that they kill several people via random accusation each match by saying they're salty that they died, is left alive until last by the impostor because they are a net benefit to the impostor, and forgets about things like med bay scans that prove innocence as soon as they vote off a person that served as a witness to said person who was proved innocent, even when the two confirm each others alibis and there is only one impostor). You'll also get 2-3 people who mindlessly follow his choice and vote before an alibi can be provided (bonus points if one of them thinks they're funny by saying they're the impostor). You will typically get one or two voices of reason, who make public lobbies tolerable. It is likely that one will rage quit at some point though.

The impostor typically doesn't have to kill much to win, a few people will get killed by the stupidity of their fellow crew. You don't even have to frame them, in fact, you can defend innocent crew members. You might think defending innocents would benefit you because it builds credibility but that doesn't apply here, no one's thinking about that. You're mostly shooting yourself in the foot as impostor but you can still win.

playing boils down to luck that the smoothbrain loudmouth and his smoothbrain lackeys kill everyone else before you as impostor. It's like RNG that you die next or not, but as impostor you can at least improve your odds by killing. Playing as crew requires that you are lucky enough for them to get the impostor voted off by chance. Your input matters little, any alibis you can provide to the innocent and evidence against the impostor is irrelevant.

Impostor is basically a 50/50 that you can sit back and watch them kill each other while winning with only a few actual kills or that they accuse you with no evidence at the very start and win through sheer luck, it doesn't matter if you can frame someone or not evidence is irrelevant for both crew and impostor.

I might have exaggerated but it's not a great experience.
