If other players are going AFK and not doing their tasks, that's their fault.
This. If a player does this, kick them. Don't ask the devs to change the entire game just because some people don't want to play it how it's meant to be played.
and if someone leaves early, maybe give them a join cool down timer because most of the time it's salty people or people trying to waste your time
That doesn't address my earlier point. If the player dies, they can still assist their team by continuing to complete their tasks. More importantly, this gives the dead player stuff to do while they are dead to prevent them from being bored.
I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to stare at the screen and twiddle my thumbs while I wait for the game to finish. I actually don't mind dying because I can still contribute to the team while dead (I can actually do it much faster while dead, so, in some ways, I get an advantage for being dead).
It does not make sense to have to rewrite the entire task-completion and death system just because some players get salty about dying.
And another thing, if someone AFKs in this game for reasons other than that something came up IRL, it means that they really don't understand this game. There's no reason to get salty about dying because people are supposed to die throughout the course of the game.
It also doesn't make sense to AFK because some of the best parts of the game are seeing the players interact with each other. Some of my favorite moments are when I'm dead and the killer is lying through their teeth about where they were while my friends point fingers at each other and I'm snickering with my mic muted.
Ghosts would have nothing to do.
You can lose because of other players in almost every multiplayer game.
Basically if a ghost doesn't move or do anything for, let's say, three (maybe five?) minutes, it kicks them and auto-completes their tasks.
