Any chance for built-in proximity voice chat?
Loving the game so far, definitely a lot of fun, especially with a lot of friends in voice chat. I know with just 1 developer and focus on keeping the game mobile-compatible the chances are rather slim, but I'd still like to point out that I think built-in proximity based voice chat could make the game even more awesome.

I'll just quickly elaborate in case someone doesn't know what I mean and why it's not simply solved by hopping on discord or teamspeak: If the game handles the voice chat it has control over who gets to hear what, which means it can do things like only let alive people talk to each other and only if they're reasonably close to each other. It could even do fancy stuff like give voices from further away a lower volume, so someone talking and walking away from you will gradually get more quiet as they're going, maybe even utilizing stereo sound or giving crew members and impostors different hearing ranges via a setting.

It would add new options for security systems/locations as well. For example have a map with an admin area with a decive to broadcast your voice through speakers somewhere/everywhere else on the ship. Another example: instead of security cameras a map could have the ability to eaves drop on certain rooms from a specific location. Basically I think both atmosphere as well as gameplay would benefit vastly from the addition and I could list countless more cool things.

If done correctly and when paired with some infrastructure changes making it easy for people to find other players interested to play with voice chat it could even improve mobile-compatibility, as speaking is easier and quicker than typing on a virtual (or really just any) keyboard.

Obviously all that would require a large amount of work done by the developer, so I myself honestly wouldn't even mind if that was something to add to a potential Among Us 2 in the future instead of the game we currently have. Would be cool to get it in here though, not going to lie.

So here's my quick overview about my suggestion, as well how I think it would benefit the game and possible problems that might be tied to the implementation:

Suggestions
  • Proximity voice chat, people can talk to each other while nearby, voices get quieter and eventually silent based on your distance to them, possibly even using stereo sound
  • A lobby setting for voice enabled, as well as separate hearing range settings for crew and impostors
  • Incorporate the new tech in a new or existing map, with loud speakers or bugging devices as described above
  • First iteration could completely ignore walls for easier implementation, later iterations could incorporate walls similarly to line of sight and make some rooms (for instance decontamination) sound proof to the outside
  • Lobby creators should be able to specify the spoken language for their lobby and mark a lobby as voice encouraged/required to make it easy for other interested people to find

How I think it would improve the game
  • Added atmosphere and suspense
  • Being alone or around others would inherently have a different feel. While the round is on-going it would feel more like actually being part of a crew working together or being a traitor afraid to be called out
  • New strategical options: imposters could meet up and discuss a strategy while they feel unobserved; crew could intentionally keep some information secret to see if someone contradicts it; mind-games and so many more
  • Could potentially make it easier to play on mobile, as speaking is easier than typing
  • Could help friends who'd otherwise play in a separate voice chat to not accidentally reveal information they weren't supposed to give (for instance laughing as they're getting killed or in the discussion while others bring up information, etc)

Possible problems
  • A lot of work to implement
  • Voice spam/trolls could become an issue
  • People would need to get used to the new circumstances
  • If it ends up being too popular it might make finding lobbies harder for people who don't wish to play with voice

I think that's all I have to say. I'd love to hear what others think about it though. I'm really enjoying the game as is, but I'm a firm believer this feature would boost the fun all the way to an 11/10.

That honestly sounds like a pretty good idea, granted the amount of mic spammers on the internet might be pretty annoying, but the over all feel of the game would be way different, and a bit more fun, in my opinion

They could add it in Among Us 2

tl;dr -- but

Re: not "mobile friendly" -- more people have Bluetooth on mobile than headsets on PC, so I don't see why it wouldn't be mobile friendly...

As for it could be weird in chat if only some people can type and some people can talk -- I would just set that up in the match making -- like, have people with the voice chat option turned on matchmake with each other -- so the players are more likely to get binned into environments where everyone has the same voice chat settings as they do.

I feel this could be a mod developed by Innersloth themselves so you aren't forced to use it in games. Maybe as a free DLC in steam for easy use.

You forgot the part that adults/people over 18 play this game too. It would be extremely uncomfortable to be in a lobby where you are over 18 and everyone else is 14-16. It would be a risk to players safety in my opinion.

Adding on, the maturity level in among us public lobbies is absolutely appalling, there are already a lot of players who abuse text chat by asking people for personal information, ASL, and social media's, as well as the amount of young men who are 'in the mood' (given most names are related to intercourse/ 'coochie' / SingleBoy/SingleGirl ) I feel like more players would be too focused on personal problems rather than playing the game.

Would love to hear everyone elses opinions and thoughts on having voice in among us.

Well... the range thing solves discord cheaters issue...
but...
i dont know...
it would be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY harder for imposters to kill cleanly, as if someone sees them, they run screaming and everyone knows who is imposter...

That's not a bad idea at all.

Though I'm sure there are ways it can be abused which we've not thought of yet.
Some jackass singing, for example, through the whole game.

Still, it would be nice to be able to tell someone to get the heck away from you if they get too close. "Dude, back off; you're making me nervous!" would be so handy to be able to say!

Why in the hell was this thread resurrected? It was a bad idea in April and it's a bad idea now.

I haven't owned the game that long, myself, and so I'm seeing it for the first time.

Bad apples will always be bad apples, voice chat if anything makes it easier to spot them. It's up to the community and devs to make sure the community is being kept clean regardless.

If it's so easy to convince you then I'm sure any good impostor would figure out to just run at you screaming "Ahh it's red, it's red" and all of a sudden it's just part of the game.

That's an interesting take considering most people here so far seemed to agree that it would add a lot to the game. Care to do add anything more to the discussion other than a "lul nope, it bad"? I've already seen this concept work really well in other games, going as far as just the VR chat version of among us, so you really have some explaining to do imho.
