is there online multiplayer?

I would like to play against my friend who lives in a different state. is this possible? is it easy to set up a match with a specific friend and how does it run and is it a good experience? we have macs.

Yes, it's possible.
Yes, it's easy.
After choosing the online multiplayer from the main menu, as opposed to the offline multiplayer, you are presented a list of your steam "friends", below a large matchmaking button.
Selecting your friend from this list sends them an invite, and when they click on it you are put into a match together.
Asuming you both have a decent connection, everything should run nicely.

You'll have to ask someone else about the mac part...
I only know about Windows.
