Holding left and right together will lock the character in a stance that matches the one when you change direction while running.
This has been nicknamed 'en garde' by the community.
Best not to let let its (in)accuracy bother you.
This move is based on the fact that it is possible to move instantly from En Garde to the cartwheel, resulting in a sudden rapid dash and potential lunge.
Here is the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5VbfMrhL2c
I also tested the speed of various moves and moving through continous cartwheels is slighly faster than running. Jump kicks are still way faster however. Still, cartwheels may be the fastest way to travel when jump kicks aren't possible, such as in the mines.
Note that this speed buff doesn't apply when you are without a sword - unarmed, running is slighly faster than cartwheels.
Cartwheels let you pick up a sword fast.
