What's the point of cartwheels & the "En Garde" stance?
So far I found a use for most moves, but not for the cartwheel & "En Garde" stance.

Seems like the cartwheel just gets you impalled into someone's sword. You retain better manoeuvrability by simple running.

As for the "En Garde" stance it's essentially just a slow walk forward. Why not just walk slowly instead?

Flair.
I'm assuming they're just movement options, small things that can possibly trip your opponent up. Maybe not as useful as stuff like wavedashing and foxtrotting in Smash, but movement options in general are nice.

How do you cartwheel?

Well in actually fencing, ''en garde'' is what you stay in all the time. Watch modern olympic fencing and you'll see it.

For those who are new to the scene, welcome, looking forward to fighting you.
Holding left and right together will lock the character in a stance that matches the one when you change direction while running.
This has been nicknamed 'en garde' by the community.
Best not to let let its (in)accuracy bother you.

Ok, I did some more research and there is at least one interesting move involving both the cartwheel and the "En Garde".

This move is based on the fact that it is possible to move instantly from En Garde to the cartwheel, resulting in a sudden rapid dash and potential lunge.

Here is the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5VbfMrhL2c

I also tested the speed of various moves and moving through continous cartwheels is slighly faster than running. Jump kicks are still way faster however. Still, cartwheels may be the fastest way to travel when jump kicks aren't possible, such as in the mines.

Note that this speed buff doesn't apply when you are without a sword - unarmed, running is slighly faster than cartwheels.

En garde lets you stab a bit further and stay away from swords a little better.
Cartwheels let you pick up a sword fast.
