Feedback needed from players that use a controller
We need some help / feedback.

We got reports from a few people since launch of the demo that their controller buttons were switched / mismatched by the game. E.g. you pressed and Y on some Xbox controller type and the game thought you were pressing A. That seemed to happen mostly for people using Mac Or Linux.
We added an optional alternative controller manager to the game now and made it the default for Mac and Linux as it seems to give better support there. (We can't switch completely as the old controller manager gave pretty good coverage on Windows, e.g. for the PS 5 Controller, which the new one doesn't.)

So we would appreciate some feedback from people using a controller and having played the game previously:

On Windows and had no problem - no feedback needed (no changes)
On Windows and had a problem - try setting the controller manager in the Controller tab to "Unity Input" and test if that fixes.
On Mac and Linux and had no problem: try again to see if the new default controller manager has a problem for you now
On Mac and Linux and had problems: try again to see if the new default controller manager solves this for you now.
We added a simple and abstract controller tester screen to the options, too.

In the long run we hope to add more profiles to the controller managers and increase support so maybe we can return to having one controller manager only, but for the moment having both as an option seems to give the broadest support for individual models.

Thanks.

not sure I could dig up my XB360 controller any time soon, would feedback from an SN30 pro+ help for comparison?

Would be interesting.

I am mostly looking for feedback though from people that already played it with controller, to know if the changes fix a few of the problems, or break something that worked previously.

Hi there, I am playing with a PS4 controller and noticed that once you add a skill point in a stat, it's not possible to remove it using the controller, I have to use my mouse and click on the (-) icon.

Was playing with my friend on his computer using split/shared screen. He couldn't get it to work with two PS5 controllers. Incontrol would have only one of the controllers actually register in-game (even though the controller test would register both). The unity input was so bad that I pressed a single button and it would trigger every single button on the controller, making it impossible to play.

Did you guys try editing in big picture mode to fix this issue externally?

Controller works great on Linux iff the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mf-ing steam controller support is disabled, completely happy as far as gamepad goes. -- I had tried to get a more official MS controller and they drift, the no-name/generic ones are fine tho.

Windows user, I've been playing with a Steam Controller emulating an xbox 360 controller (detected as generic xinput) with no issues whatsoever. Actually a breath of fresh air for an early access title to have such complete controller functionality at release, so thankyou and kudos for that.

The only thing I recall running into that I couldn't do solely on the controller was press F1 to submit feedback. All controller glyphs consistently appeared as Xbox glyphs.

Only issue I've noticed on PS4 controller so far is that the big middle button (the touchpad thing) sometimes opens the pause menu, and sometimes the area map. I've had the function of the button change unexpectedly during gameplay back and forth.

Maybe this is some functionality of the button itself I don't know about, and I'm triggering it somehow? I don't really play PS4 so not sure what it's even for tbh.

Oh uh Windows

Running on Windows 10 and this type of controller (photo below), which I believe is a PS2/PS3-like clone. I'm having the following issue:

The character moves up and down with the right stick and left and right with the DPad, but not the other way around.

The left stick works fine to aim the ranged weapon and the other buttons, triggers and bumpers are also fine.

Playing on a ps4 pad. No issues at all, buttons all work as intended and even had button prompts default correctly as ps4 buttons.

Still can't get xbox one wireless controller to work while other joysticks connected.
As reported earlier: https://steamcommunity.com/app/941460/discussions/0/3046104336672542353/

If I go to controller menu and select either Controler Manager, the Test shows blank diagram and no xbox inputs work. Disconnecting joystick devices does fix but not acceptable solution.

Still looking forward to trying and buying the game when this is fixed.
Remember over 2 million people just bought Microsoft Flight Simulator, so there are a lot of joysticks connected now.

Off brand controller would stop working after setting a second local coop player using keyboard/mouse. If player 1 used keyboard, player 2 using controller wouldn't respond to any input. Playing single player on either keyboard/mouse or controller worked with no problems.

I'm trying to use a Switch Pro controller on a Mac, and the controller just goes completely bonkers. I've tried the different options in the menu, and all settings have the same result. My character will just run around like crazy, shooting and puking all over the place.

I played the demo today with a Razer Xbox One controller. Everything worked well, but the biggest issue was the inventory navigation. I think the buttons and triggers need to be swapped. I keep getting messed up probably because of other games I've played.

The buttons are controlling a menu physically higher than the triggers, but the triggers are higher up on the controller. Even after 2 hours in the demo, I still couldn't figure out the inventory navigation.

While I appreciate you putting in a way to remap buttons, I think this default isn't good, and I didn't see a way to change these buttons only in menus.

Honestly, that feels like personal preference. For me the shoulder buttons feel "higher" than the triggers, as they physically are when a controller is lying flat on a table.
You are the second or third person mentioning this, so I know it's a problem for some, but we also have thousands of controller players, plus the one who tried the Xbox demo, not mentioning this as a problem.
In all other games I know the shoulder buttons are always for the main navigation. I just tested Outer Worlds and Deus Ex and they have the same setup as Death Trash.
The Death Trash input bindings for Window Navigation Left / Right and Secondary Window Navigation Left / Right are what you should change.
