You don't "need" to.
When I played ND I did get some "HURK" items. i.e. Gun and vehicle maybe more because I had FC5. IIRC.

New Dawn is a direct sequel to FC5. You don't have to play it, but you won't know the story.

It would be best if you do FC5 first for the story. Especially if you plan to play 5 later. This game will spoil 5's story.
It might help a little bit with the mechanics too, playing 5 first.

They go over it a bit at the start of ND but yeah for the full story of course play 5 first.

I would say its because, while smaller, it has far more replayable features. Like taken/retaking outposts, building up your base, double jump(which make exploring, jumping around buildings so much more fun) etc. Though 2k is quite a bit, I only have that amount in games like fallout 4, skyrim, sins but that is due to mods, I would have stopped playing the standard games at around 500 :p
