Special Takedowns

I can't seem to figure out the special takedowns. I sometimes see a prompt come up, but I must be doing something totally wrong because all it does is leave me standing awkwardly by an enemy while breaking stealth. Is there a trick to this? Is it something that would be easier with a controller?

Edit - I am of course talking about the special chain & sidearm takedowns, not the normal kind.

i noticed it too kinda. works better for me sometimes when i first see the prompt i hold that button

First hit the indicated button to setup chain, then use left mousebutton on next target and you shoot with your pistol. May not kill instantly if underpowered.

I just picked up the chain takedown skill and haven't seen any on-screen prompts to activate it so far. Haven't had trouble with the sidearm takedown though - that one I just hold down the prompted button and my dude will pull his sidearm after completing the initial takedown and then I can shoot enemies in the head with it.
