Guns/fangs for Hire
So for me so far the most useful companion has been Timber the dog. Spots things, oneshots human targets most the time, and brings me back resources and extra ammo quite often. Second most useful has been the boar, he just doesn't die. Both of them racked up over 100 kills pretty quickly for me.

The rest end up faceplanting whenever we get into a real fight, with Nana being the one who gets the most kills out of the human guns for hire. The least useful for me? The Judge. I know he/she/it is the character we played in Far Cry 5 (I read the diary entries and facepalmed so hard when I realized they converted to following Joseph). But I guess 17 years alone with a guy... But the Judge has been about as effective even in stealth situations as a whip made out of a single wet spaghetti noodle. Judge keeps face planting, never seems to kill anything, hell barely hits anything, and last time I tried to use him to stealth kill someone he killed the target then ran in a random direction and alerted 3 other guys only to take a series of shotgun blasts to the face clutch his crotch and fall to the ground. Mind I had him with the level 3 health bar too, he was technically an elite.

What about you guys? whats your rankings of guns for hire/bulletsponge/sacrificial companion?

I got the boar and tried to take a level 2 outpost and he got murdered constantly. He's got 4 kills, pretty useless.

I took Nana to a level 3 outpost and had her snipe a lot of Highwaymen but when the stealth was blown I was constantly reviving her.

The Judge is your hunting buddy, animals won't attack unless attacked, that's what they are good for, their days of fighting people are pretty much done. When I did run around with them, they didn't need reviving. I'll try again later to see what is what on tougher stuff. I do recall some nice stealth kills by them, but on roadside bad guys not outposts.

For the Boar when he gets 15 kills he gets the ability to get back up when knocked out so it is hard to kill him onced leveled up.

I got timber like 15 minutes into the game and never used anyone else except for brief "tests" seeing if any other character was any good. short answer is no they aren't.

This here. Did the same with Boomer in 5. I just plain love dogs.

Besides, Timbers abilities are extremely useful and work in well with my play style.

I got Timber early too but that spotting enemies is easy mode. Third and three quarters re-play through requires testing of alternate methods, mostly so I can know what all these Cry babies are talking about when they cry about how hard the game is. It ain't entirely easy but it's nothing to write home to The Mother about with tear soaked pages of pain and angst.

Eh its only hard if you try to perfect stealth everything in my opinion. Theres always that one enemy that you didn't notice that spots you and ruins a undetected on a level 3 outpost run. But if you're willing to settle for no alarms its fairly easy, especially once you get the elite guns unlocked.

Timber seems to be a choice that works for many.

Feel exactly the same. My Judge died getting out of vehicles more often than she survived.
I ended up going deer hunting to finish off the 40 kc.

Im still playing the game so i did not get a couple companions yet, i rotated between them, if the current dies, then I select the next in line until that one dies.
I like each for different reasons,
From Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn these companions have far LESS to say and repeat the same lines quite often.
Any dog from FC5 or FCND seems to be good for small game, as the dogs spot them allowing you to set up am ambush and get rabbits(FCND) and birds, skins and feathers I do not normally get otherwise.
the ai is so stupid made in this game..
the priest kills the hostage every time I shoot on the driver of a truck..driver is dead, I run to open the back door of the vehicle, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ shot the hostage dead...*facepalm*
Only the Dog is somehow useful, but never for outpost liberations, this stupid peace of sh**** every time alerts the enemys..
evan if you tell them to stay there... they start to attack your enemys, evan if you go for ghost takedowns..
Dev´s missed to set some passive command lines for the companions..

I've never had the driver kill the hostage...i seem to be able to manage that quite well on my own :steamfacepalm:

From my experiences with FC New Dawn, it's a bit of a mixed reaction from FC5. Surprisingly some FC5 companions have better AI initiative than FC ND. My list of picks since I like to play the stealth approach [AR(1), Bow (2), Sniper(3)]:

1) Nana : She a good replacement for Grace. Back then I used to bring both Jess & Grace, but the repetitive 'serious' dialogue between the two made me switch to bring Jess & Hurk. Nana's better than Grace in my play through cause she move faster than Grace, gets her spot, and one shots (or 2 for elites) and ran back to her post. Also, her 'witch' laugh and taunts kept me smiling. But at times, her AI seems to ran across the whole outpost to get to the marked enemy we want her to kill and she might get stuck between staircases or climbable ledge.

2) Carmina : I took her from the start of the story and brought her along until I got Nana and replaced her. XD She was fun to have, loud like her mother and quite useful in drawing the attention. Plus her dynamite skill is helpful in scattering the enemies away from your sniping spot. She has good aim for an AR companion, and good to bring while travelling (driving/riding) around the map. She stealth kills when you're crouching and help with take downs when we're reloading. I don't have any flaws using her except when she's overwhelmed by 2 snipers. She's also a good companion to bring into expedition but i recommend Gina for this instead of her.

3) Horatio : This walking tank is a tank. Once you get all his skills, he's the best pal for you to snipe from afar. :D Aside from reviving himself when downed, he also can PUT OUT FIRE by rolling himself on the ground (or nearby water; riverbanks etc). Oh yea, he can hit a moving car and toss those Highwaymen that's mounting in the gunner seat. Job made easy if you team up with Horatio when sniping. Of course, after you scouted out the place. He's only overwhelmed when enemies are using either a rocket launcher or grenade launcher. That's when we come in to get the party going. :D

4) Timber : Best pal ever. I'm slightly pissed that Ubi didn't put the dog animation in FC5. When I saw a bike with a side car, my head was like "Okay, Ubi, does this animation exist?" Hopped in and looks at the side car and YEARGH! Saw Timber grinning in the seat saying like "We movin' or not?" Hahaha. :D Also, get him first if you'd like to play the stealth approach. Nana's helpful since you can "Snyc Shot" between enemies, but Timber's pure fun to poke at the enemies. Scout all the enemies, and let Timber pick them off. One by one. You job gets easier when he's spotted and snipe those chasing him. If the outpost's still not cleared, send him to scout area and let him find the missing enemy(s). Also, he's good at scavenging materials at all interest points. He's only flaw is that he "negotiate" too long with wild animals, and sometimes get downed by a wild cougar, bison, wolverine, and especially bear. At times wolves and wild dogs too. Usually i kill those animals before they could reach him. :p

5) Gina : She's good to bring along in expedition and mission. She can stealth kills (melee or sometimes 1 shot from her MG). And She's quite a bullet sponge in crossfire. Her explosive bullets are helpful if you'd like to go all mayhem on the enemy, and she has good aim with her MG. Only issue I had with her is that she sometimes doesn't escape fires. When caught in fires, depends on her surroundings, she either back away or just sit there. ^^; but overall she's good to bring with on mission, exploration, and not to mention, she has good melee with wild animals. :D

6) Deputy / The Judge: I was disappointed when I got him. I rushed through the mission to get him. Skipped all the cut scenes, and was like "What...?" TBH, Jess is a better stealth companion that Dep. Despite her running mouth. XD Dep's okay since we know who he is, but once into action, I just slouch and laid my chin on the desk. He can sneak quickly, and gets his kills (if there's literally nothing between him and his target), and he doesn't make much noise (since he's mute). But in comparison to Jess, Jess is better. If you're 150m away from your enemies/base, Jess will HUNT them down but to a clear shot point. Dep did the same but it took him so long to even land a shot, even when the enemy just sit there and didn't patrol around. The worse part is when you actually follow him, his arrows didn't go thru. Why? Cause there's a tree between him and his target. :steamfacepalm: and you can see the arrows stuck in the tree. Jess will usually find a clear shot and snipe the enemies. Even inside a building, she'll sneak inside to either melee them or snipe from a safe distance. Sometime she even shot through a window. Plus if she's spotted and an enemy or two go after her, she'll do her best to take them down before running back to your spot. Dep took 3 minutes to get 1 enemy and i lost my patience. XD Dep's good to bring along for hunting and scavenging. And his passive which lets wild animal (especially elite animals who like to attack at night) look away from your post. Just leave him with Kim when you're out on an expedition. Still, he's cool guy to bring along the car rides. :)

7) Hurk Jr. : Hurk's fun. His lines are funny. And he's a dad now so you get all the "quick questions" and funny dialogues from him. He's okay in fights. A bit weak to start off but better when his skills are unlocked. He's the 'long range sniper'. XD He gets enemies confused but made me laugh. He 'snipe' with his rocket launcher and when the enemies not dead and he got shot, he'll start screaming. Hahaha. His dialogue with Gina is quite fun too. He's a good distraction to have for the stealth approach. He gets the enemies confuse and lure all the attention to him. XD His only problem are being overwhelm by a lot of enemies or sometime wild animals.

8) Pastor Jerome : Yes. I just rescued him cause I thought he's using some awesome weapon or some new skills that's better than FC5. Not much i guess. A shotgun. He's quite decent and I rarely use him cause playing stealth, he'll sneak up and melee every enemy set to him. Unless caught or in a crossfire, he'll start firing. His fire bullets are good but limited by the shotgun itself. If he's using an AR, that'll be a better upgrade, but we got Carmina for that already.

Phew. Darn Ubi shoulda put that animation back in FC5. Is there an animation extractor that we can put in FC5 for Boomer? Also, Timber can climb into a car with you. That alone made me stop saving Hope County and gone fishing. :DD

Sadly you can only pet Timber when he's assigned. You can't even pat his head back at the companions place. Also, I hoped there's an update where Ubi will put all the companions back at Prosperity once you've upgraded it to Lvl 3. They should have some good lines with the folks there instead of us assigning them one by one just to listen to those lines. AND Ubi should make at least 2 companions to hire. It helps when both you and your companion are down. XD

Timber for scouting, Nana for stealthy fire support, and Horatio for letting him loose to wreck elite outposts by himself while I stroll in afterwards to clean up.
To me timber just goes by himself and kills the highway men by him self. He even finds me stuff by sniffing it out. If you watch him while sniffing the ground and follow him he will dig you up springs cooper or gears. I got over 500 kills with him just cause when i get attack and shooting one timber will go after the other ones for me.

Wouldn't that set off the alarm?

Animals attacking don't prompt alarms.
