Ah, Love! is a simple sliding block puzzle with a twist - you manipulate the board to control objects inside, and guide them to meet. It's complicated by unmovable blocks, spikes, and an enemy to avoid. Fans of simple puzzle games will find a lot of content here across 120 levels and optional challenges for two extra achievements.

Unlike many of the cheap achievement games on steam, this one has sizable content for a minimum price. Not only that, the developer improved the game from its initial release. Now included are a cycling backgrounds, a level editor, and two specific challenges for applicable levels: Complete the level in a limited number of moves, and complete certain levels on specific pink tiles, the latter of which requires often more challenging routes to achieve.

My biggest complaint would be having to replay cleared levels after the challenges were implemented, since it doesn't save your "best scores" for cleared levels. This won't apply to new players.

Achievement hunters: Completion achievements, but not super easy. Scouting the minimal move solutions will add substantial hours to your playtime. 10+ hours is my estimate not including idle time.

PLAY THE DEMO!!!

This is a nice, well executed, very smart, costing just 1 buck game, which you may enjoy for at least quite a few hours (120 levels/puzzles currently, 40 more planned, level editor). Child of love, 1st and only one so far, of a developer not likely to abandon it. What more could you want? Well, it depends.

If you want to train your spacial imagination, this seems to be a very good tool. Actually I would advice the dev to check, if he could enter as well into the educational software market. Complex shapes with moving elements and necessity to plan quite a few moves ahead may however be too challenging and frustrating for some players, while giving a lot of joy and satisfaction to others.

This game is hard for at least some of us; currently just 10% of players have earned any achievement in it. As a person fully aware of my quite limited spacial imagination capabilities, but at the same time a completionist, I must admit, that I have not made my mind yet, if I'm personally going to love or hate it. Hence, as I've said at the beginning: Play the DEMO and check for yourself.

My rating: between 8/10 and 9/10. It could still be a bit higher, if the dev was able to implement a redo for the last move, but doing so may not be as simple, as it sounds.

Ah, Love! takes the often tired and tedious formats of mazes and tile sliding puzzles and introduces a puzzle element that makes them actually work quite well together. Moving the tiles around to guide the two hearts to become one requires some thought and their magnetic attraction to each other makes play about deliberate, planned movements. A romantic theme and a dash of small hazards you must avoid prevents Ah, Love! from feeling lifeless despite its level design sometimes requiring practical yet plain wall arrangements to put up a fight, and while it is certainly simple overall, the simplicity seems to be part of its appeal. Like a book full of word searches or Sudoku, it’s a good fit for a pastime that will mentally stimulate you a bit, and considering its tile slider and maze roots, it certainly could have been much worse.

Much like an activity book, Ah, Love! serves its purpose well, but its digital nature allows for a unique angle of interactivity that pen and paper would struggle with. It’s not hard to pick up how to play Ah, Love! but it does require some thought to complete, which is a smart way of designing puzzles that are a nice fit for idly completing. Perhaps it would have been more accessible on mobile, but that would likely mean sacrificing some of the more intricate or larger designs to try and fit smaller phone screens, meaning that the PC platform did allow it to better explore its small set of ideas. Much like a book of word searches though, sometimes introducing too many new elements could taint the approachability of the puzzle set, so while there may be new and interesting ways to twist the design of this love-based puzzler, it settles into a little niche that it probably doesn’t need to be pulled out of.

Besides a few almost negligible quirks like the cluttered level select, Ah, Love! is just a game that is what it needs to be. It’s a collection of little puzzles that take a few minutes to complete at most but can still tickle your brain a bit while you figure their simple design out. For something to do during your down time, Ah, Love! provides a fine batch of puzzles to play with, but it’s not likely to truly capture your heart due to that simplicity.

I bought Ah, Love! out of curiosity, and a game that costs less than 1€ is a fairly good selling argument, right?

It doesn't have stunning graphics, but it offers a solid proof of concept, that has never been seen before to my knowledge. At first, it looks like another tile-sliding puzzle, and it's exactly what it is. However, it adds a simple mechanic that turns it into a whole different experience :
The tiles are different pieces of a maze with two hearts, a pink one and a blue one, symbolizing two lovers that must be reunited. But the lovers are automatically attracted to each other : you can only control them by moving the tiles themselves.

It's as simple as that, it's a brilliant idea on paper, and the result is surprisingly good.
Ah, Love! will make you think in a way you're probably not used to, at least before you start to understand how it works. All levels are handmade and they appear to be well designed : there's usually one unique path to take to beat a level, but you'll first need to fiddle around and move the tiles to see which one fit with another.

There are a lot of different new mechanics introduced at the beginning of the game, which is an excellent thing in a puzzle game. From level 50 and on, I felt like there was a nice variety in the level design. There's a few surprising ideas later on.
The gameplay itself is very addictive, and for the price it's all that matters.

In the end, I bought Ah, Love! to support the developer, because it's a very promising puzzle-game, and I have no doubt with some extra work he will come up with new original ideas in the future. I hope this honest review can help.

[Edit 02/2019] : The developer has updated the game with enhanced art and visuals as well as a better menu to keep track of the optional objectives. I can't recommend it enough !
