Simple solution: Add more engies to the patrol so that either your mass storage gets filled completely or there is no plane mass to reclaim anymore ;) .
-repair
-gather resources
-"gather" enemy units close by
-recharge fuel
-recharge shield
-assist unit construction
-assist building construction
-assist missile construction
-assist upgrading units
-attack enemies in range (if equipped with a weapon)
...or set a distance around it's route as limit for that.
They also have other annoying behaviours, like...
-not updating orders that have already been completed by other engineers (which affects already removed unit and structure remains as well as structure construction orders not updating properly)
-not gathering resources anymore once the storage units are like 80% full but instead driving along their assigned path, not even stopping, even when everything in range would still fit in these storage units without wasting excess resources
-not stopping with automated gathering for the moment when this just causes excess resources to go to waste
-trying to attack enemy targets with their guns, if the have a weapon (UEF T2 Sparky, SACUs), even when their weapon is disabled (example: SACU ordered to assist a shield with recharging at some vital spot -> some ground unit drives by -> SACU tries to chase after it in an attempt to use it's disabled weapon on it so even if the enemy just stands still in range nothing happens other than the SACU failing to do it's assigned task)
-bumping into another multiple times if using multiple engineers, delaying all actions extremely, up to the point where entire construction orders are skipped because of all the delaying, eventually resulting in build orders being wrong, resulting in critical economy situations or elevation manipulation on uneven terrain that ruins a build pattern as it was planned
You'll just have to bear with it.
Ordering an engineer to assist a single structure each works best when it comes to autorepair. FA added repair stations for that job that cover some area but also try to assist construction and upgrades within it, which may not be desired. To avoid damage shield bubbles (T2 mobile shields or stationary structures) work best. In Faforever these also negate air crash damage from aircraft.
Yeah I already saw the repair stations and will use them for sure once I got into FA but right now I am still playing through the main game.
Thank you for all the information :)
