Hey!
First of all, stick to masks and do not provide suits for everyone. Not every settlers needs to have protection clothing all the time (you can limit this in the town center) and suits are just for high contamination (red). Also having radiated food can be countered pretty well with enough herbs, or just food from fields and orchards. :)
So i gues food radiation is countered with an external protection system like clothing. Tad bit unrealistic but hey its a game.
I was foccusing on mainly masks and orchards, but for realism i wanted to mix in some meat and other items. Gues its not worth the hassle especially if you get more and more high radiation rain. Maybe they should add this in the weather station also. Only gather and hunt when radiation is low med high? Kinda is wierd a few hundred people are living of pecan seeds only :D
Love the tip on clothing permissions ill use that more often i gues and slowly build a supply of rad suits for whenever its neccesary. Again that might be a nice option for the weather station. Only use "clothing" when there is xxx amount of radiation.
No the clothing does not protect you from radiated food. If your settlers are exposed too long to contaminated food or water, they will get radiated. But if you mix their nutrition good enough with other not contaminated resources, this is "not too bad" basically. :D Providing herbs lifts their health just enough so they can be healthy even though eating contaminated food. In germany we say "Die Dosis macht das Gift", what basically means "It just is poisoning if you consume too much of it".
Yeah we will probably be adding more fine tuning for different mechanics in the future, so this is something a player can adjust for himself.
Another hint: You can basically limit the permissions for clothing to "None" right at the beginning of your run and immediately build up a quite good amount of mask. Unless there is no yellow radiation, your settlers can pretty much "tank" the damage the green radiation does to you. This way you can build up a certain stock better in the beginning and be more flexible later on.
