also, throughout the map there are factories you can bring the commander to to capture them so you get more vehicles
You should go though the way that is near your base - it is faster and easier (you can set points to the convoy with your General, so use it, however if the convoy reaches this point, it will return to its primary way, so set them often). Also, your enemies will always attack the convoy firstly, so it is easier to kill them while they are running to the Ultramarines.
You canalso try to watch the walkthrough to understand how to act better
Obj 1: Reach the small base just N of your starting position via micro with general to move the Land Raider for fire support and your initial units (don't forget the couple sitting in the drop ship)
Obj 2: Sit tight, for a good bit in that new base. Get power generators up and the single CP nearby and get an LP on it. You want to build up the tech on your main base to upgrade your power/requisition income.
Obj 2b: You're going to be hit constantly by everything. I holed up in the base with artillery, APCs, and guardsman. Don't forget to upgrade everyone at the armory. Play defense and remember the default behavior on the Land Raider will be to start to drive off after 5 minutes, so you need to have your General re-position it.
Tip: I got the Land Raider in the middle of the base and made power generators around it, then stuck an artillery in the control mode where it fires but never moves (hold ground?). This frees you up from the re-position micro.
Obj 2c: While you're remembering to breath, you need to send your general north with one guardsman squad to two bases, on separate runs. You'll notice the blue light pillars on the left side of the map, you need to grab the two military bases there. The first one will increase your armor cap, which you need to pump out three Leman Russ tanks. The other base far to the north is for the Baneblade and a relic capture point. You'll want that beast too.
Obj 2d: Do not consider going on offense until you have a force (IMHO this worked for me):
3 Leman Russ tanks
1 Baneblade
1 Fully-loaded command squad (I went with the melee specialists)
2 Ogryn squads (with priests attached, or whatever you'd like)
1 Engiseer + APC (kept them around for repairing Land Striker and armor)
Keep a skeleton crew on defense, they'll continue to attack your base while your convoy heads out.
It gets a little easier after this point, but not much. You just micro your way all the way through the three gates, the final control point, then the mad dash through the portal. You'll have minimal breathing room the entire way with consistent waves as you move your force and reinforce, repair, micro, and take CPs to drop gate defenses.
Good luck.
Its hell.
Once the landraider got to the final gate I noticed that it got stuck, so I sent the Commander inside the gate and told the convoy to move to him, and that unstuck the convoy and won the mission.
Don't get tempted to go attacking or clearing out the giant base at the bottom, the game seems to spawn bigger waves of enemies more frequently the further you get. And thinking about it now, there's probably many more easy ways to play this...
