Is there a way to beat this substory without actually having to play Mahjong? I expected to just get into a fight when I inevitably lose the round but it just put me 1000 points in debt so now I have to win two games instead.

You can use a Peerless tile to win instantly, I'm pretty sure you can find one in the mahjong building.

Check one floor below the Mahjong place. There should be a Peerless Tile which if you use it, it gives you the best possible hand on the first turn to clean up the table.

Thanks for the tip, but won't that tile only work once? I'm pretty sure I need to win two games now, unless the game is kind enough to solve the quest after just one win.

yeah it works once but you get the best hand possible and you net 30000 points. mahjong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

also, you can keep losing over and over, it will restart you with 1000 points

I've found another peerless tile, I think it was in one locker but i'm not so sure now (I've collected so much stuff by now).
