Or the official localization for Neptunia Re;birth 2, where the director added memes and internet slang everywhere, to the point people - even die-hard Neptunia fans - thought it was so cringy they made a retranslation patch. and I'll tell you what, we're used to cringe with those games.
This ♥♥♥♥ happens more often that you'd think, and anyone who can understand a little bit of Japanese will see how "wrong" some localization choices are. But who cares, we're only filthy weebs, right? It's not like I worked in the localization industry for a while, had lunch with great
professional translators/adapters everyday for years, and know exactly how unprofessional most of the American ones can be, especially in regards to Japanese games or shows...
My take on the words that were already debated:
1. I really do not like Maloccio, this sudden italians sounds very wrong. Any option without this sounds fine including a literal translation. I do not mind the sound of it as I feel that the Context of japanese development and origin of the name is known to everyone here
2. In the case of the benevodons i would prefer the elegant use of Divine beasts that has been suggested.
3. Goremand is actually fine in my eyes. Death jester was suitable for the sprite in the original but i have a hard time fitting it to the demon thing that we now have.
4. If Vuscav is the original name, i would go with that, rather than booskaboo. That i itself is an odd choice on the fan-translators part.
Not sure how you plan to go about it Shuichi Niwa but I am not sure that i can keep up full time on this topic. In any case, thanks for offering.
The link is updated in the first post.
yus!
Also WTF is Oblivisle, are they really serious?
mehh there is nothing elegant about them: they are beings of pure chaos, destruction and death... and be4 you say it: Zable Fahr's primary head might look like an elegant lady but that thing is terror incarnate...even it's other ugly mugs are adorable compared to her!!! the worst one of them all (though Dolan is also quite a nasty beast with his lunar Kamehameha >.< ). hence why i also do not really like Benevo-dons... benevo as in benevolent?? they are malicious beings of destruction!
i preferred God-Beasts myself since they seem to be Godly beings but the polar opposite of say the Goddess and elementals.
There's a difference between "the divine beasts are elegant" and "the term 'divine divine beasts' seems the most elegant translation"
I think Lordofriva meant the latter... though I could be mistaken.
correct, my aplogies. I am not a native speaker ^^"
Yeah the more I think about it, the more I feel like the translators just saw "kami kemono" without any context, thought "hey, they're gods, divine... so they must be benevolent, right? There we go, Benovodons!"
This is related to children of mana, which i never played:
https://mana.fandom.com/wiki/Benevodons
Where they are good. Divinity in itself, does in my understanding not mean inherently good.
Further comments regarding the doc:
1. Death eater is also fine imho.
2. I definitely prefer Belladonna over bigieu which is a name i can't even pronounce.
3. I do prefer Masked mage over masked magus. Magus just sounds pretentious.
Everything else seems to align exactly how i would like it to be.
Until I looked at the Japanese Wikipedia, saw her name written 美獣イサベラ, and realized that Bigieu was a mangled romanization of Bijuu, meaning "Beautiful Beast." Seems kind of like a title rather than a straight name to me (Like a lot of the antagonists), hence why she hides it when pretending to be human.
Any thought to changing techs and spells? You're going to be running into those names much more often than locations/classes/characters, and it's pretty goofy when the spell name that characters yell out doesn't match what's written. Holy Bolt to Holy Ball, etc.
Close, it's "Shinjuu." Same kanji, different reading.
It's the same name that was used for Secret of Mana's final boss in Japanese IIRC, so "Mana Beast" would also be much better than what we ended up with.
Looking it up, it seems like that boss is still called Mana Beast in the SoM remake. They should have maintained the connection with that game instead of trying to maintain the connection with a 14 year old DS game that nobody liked.
Belladonna is what they used for her real name (Beautiful Beast). It actually sounds beautiful and dangerous at the same time, and a bit similar to Isabella. Personally I really like this name.
Mana Beast is a great naming choice. I would have to ask for everyone opinion about whether to use Mana Beast or Divine Beast. Mana Beast is indeed quite fitting with the game theme (Mana Tree, Mana Goddess, Mana Sword).
Will be adding spells / abilities later.
Belladonna is probably fine, yeah.
