Above is the link for the Google Sheet of the changes we will used in the Restoration Patch. Anyone can view it. If you have any question or opinion please discuss in this topic.

Like many people who played the original game (with the fan-translation) have known, this remake used the "official translation" of Trials of Mana and as such there are many names that are translate different and (in my opinion) absurdly, not to mention INCORRECT when compare to the original Japanese name. For example:

=Location=
Mintos -> Mintas
Bucca -> Beuca
Forcena -> Valsena
Sultan -> Sirhtan
Elrand -> Alrant
Pedan -> Pedda
Dorian -> Doria

=Name=
God-Beast -> Benevodon
Evil Eyes Count -> Malocchio
Nikita -> Niccolo
Leroy -> Leron

=Class=
Sword Master => Edelfrei
Hresvelgr => Brynhild

So for the sake of old times, if there is enough people who want it I can make a Restoration Patch that change the names back to what they should be (of course not everything 100% like the fan-translation, there are some that I change or keep myself for example Vuscav is a nicer name than Bookskaboo).

The patch will be very unintrusive as it will be a small .pak file (about ~20Mb) that you put into the paks folder inside the game and that's all. It will be read by the game as an update patch which only change some texts. Simply delete it if you want to go back to normal. No strings attached.

Let me know it you guys want it and it shall be done. Only then can we continue to the next step - argue on which names should be used and why =))

P/s : I know this thing only matters to people who play the original games with the fan-translation in the old days. People who have never played this game before should have no problem witht this and thus please refrain from leaving useless or aggresive comments. UPDATED: The same thing aply to people who played the game before but have no interest in this patch. Thank you very much, to each his own :D

On the other hand, you get official localizations like the one for Tales of Hearts R, where the director completely changed the characters' personalities and way of talking, because, as he said himself, that's how he "felt" the characters should be and act, with no regard to the orignal script.
Or the official localization for Neptunia Re;birth 2, where the director added memes and internet slang everywhere, to the point people - even die-hard Neptunia fans - thought it was so cringy they made a retranslation patch. and I'll tell you what, we're used to cringe with those games.

This ♥♥♥♥ happens more often that you'd think, and anyone who can understand a little bit of Japanese will see how "wrong" some localization choices are. But who cares, we're only filthy weebs, right? It's not like I worked in the localization industry for a while, had lunch with great
professional translators/adapters everyday for years, and know exactly how unprofessional most of the American ones can be, especially in regards to Japanese games or shows...
Yeah, this is the major problem with localization teams :P they always want to take their "creative liberty" with these things and it has always been complained about when it comes to localization stuff. They are very high off their horses and tend to think that just BECAUSE they can translate it means that they have complete freedom over something that isn't theirs.
Let's not devolve into squabbles about if localisation is good or bad. Some People, like me, are certainly interested and Shuichi Niwa volunteered and that should be appreciated.

My take on the words that were already debated:

1. I really do not like Maloccio, this sudden italians sounds very wrong. Any option without this sounds fine including a literal translation. I do not mind the sound of it as I feel that the Context of japanese development and origin of the name is known to everyone here

2. In the case of the benevodons i would prefer the elegant use of Divine beasts that has been suggested.

3. Goremand is actually fine in my eyes. Death jester was suitable for the sprite in the original but i have a hard time fitting it to the demon thing that we now have.

4. If Vuscav is the original name, i would go with that, rather than booskaboo. That i itself is an odd choice on the fan-translators part.

Not sure how you plan to go about it Shuichi Niwa but I am not sure that i can keep up full time on this topic. In any case, thanks for offering.

Don't forget Rolante
I have put up a Google Sheet for everyone to follow. What's in the sheet is only the names I propose (and they are noted as such). Everything is open for suggestion and debating. Also I will be adding more when I have time myself.

The link is updated in the first post.

mehh there is nothing elegant about them: they are beings of pure chaos, destruction and death... and be4 you say it: Zable Fahr's primary head might look like an elegant lady but that thing is terror incarnate...even it's other ugly mugs are adorable compared to her!!! the worst one of them all (though Dolan is also quite a nasty beast with his lunar Kamehameha >.< ). hence why i also do not really like Benevo-dons... benevo as in benevolent?? they are malicious beings of destruction!

i preferred God-Beasts myself since they seem to be Godly beings but the polar opposite of say the Goddess and elementals.

There's a difference between "the divine beasts are elegant" and "the term 'divine divine beasts' seems the most elegant translation"

I think Lordofriva meant the latter... though I could be mistaken.

correct, my aplogies. I am not a native speaker ^^"
I'm not a fan of "Divine Beast" either. It sounds too... I don't know, noble? Like the divine beasts from Breath of the Wild or something.

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I feel like the translators just saw "kami kemono" without any context, thought "hey, they're gods, divine... so they must be benevolent, right? There we go, Benovodons!"

This is related to children of mana, which i never played:
https://mana.fandom.com/wiki/Benevodons

Where they are good. Divinity in itself, does in my understanding not mean inherently good.

Further comments regarding the doc:

1. Death eater is also fine imho.
2. I definitely prefer Belladonna over bigieu which is a name i can't even pronounce.
3. I do prefer Masked mage over masked magus. Magus just sounds pretentious.

Everything else seems to align exactly how i would like it to be.
It should be Isabella instead of Belladonna. I haven't looked at the Japanese script, but the way the fan translation handled her name always felt really off to me. I remember it saying Bigieu was her true name or somesuch as if it was meaningful, but it didn't make any sense.

Until I looked at the Japanese Wikipedia, saw her name written 美獣イサベラ, and realized that Bigieu was a mangled romanization of Bijuu, meaning "Beautiful Beast." Seems kind of like a title rather than a straight name to me (Like a lot of the antagonists), hence why she hides it when pretending to be human.

Any thought to changing techs and spells? You're going to be running into those names much more often than locations/classes/characters, and it's pretty goofy when the spell name that characters yell out doesn't match what's written. Holy Bolt to Holy Ball, etc.

Close, it's "Shinjuu." Same kanji, different reading.

It's the same name that was used for Secret of Mana's final boss in Japanese IIRC, so "Mana Beast" would also be much better than what we ended up with.

Looking it up, it seems like that boss is still called Mana Beast in the SoM remake. They should have maintained the connection with that game instead of trying to maintain the connection with a 14 year old DS game that nobody liked.

Belladonna is what they used for her real name (Beautiful Beast). It actually sounds beautiful and dangerous at the same time, and a bit similar to Isabella. Personally I really like this name.

Mana Beast is a great naming choice. I would have to ask for everyone opinion about whether to use Mana Beast or Divine Beast. Mana Beast is indeed quite fitting with the game theme (Mana Tree, Mana Goddess, Mana Sword).

Will be adding spells / abilities later.

Oh! I haven't done a Hawkeye/Riesz run in Collection of Mana yet, so I just assumed they changed Isabella for no apparent reason.

Belladonna is probably fine, yeah.

Any plans for a version to fix just the class names and only the class names? Or better yet, produce the patch with some sort of a JSON file for settings where we choose what we want for certain things.
