Possibly, they did make every class have unique look instead of a color pallet swap.
But yes, there are equipment upgrades for weapons.
And special attacks depend on the class you chose, you'll have single or full screen techs.
You got elemental sword buffs, and access to these also depends on your class. Duran's dark class gets access to more of these, and the Tier 3 "Swordmaster" class gets access to the largest # of elemental swords, and can multi-target the fire/ice/light/earth ones, and single target leaf and moon saber. Swordmaster in the original game (Dark => Light) was one of Duran's best classes, IMO.
Paladin got access to saint saber, and most of the toughest enemies are weak to light element. You also can't buy consumable items that give saint saber (some enemies could drop them rarely, I think). Paladin was also pretty strong for a pure light class, had a very good full screen level 3 tech. I'd still rank that class lower than Duelist or Swordmaster though. But all of Duran's classes were good, except for Light => Dark (Liege) class, which doesn't get a level 3 full screen tech. On a powerhouse like Duran, you want him to have a full screen level 3 tech IMO. That class gets multi-target heal light, but there are consumable items that you can buy that have multi-target heal light, and there are no consumables that make you use a level 3 full screen tech.
You can pick 3 of the 6 characters, and the characters you pick will determine which backstory you follow. Each character has to make a choice of going light or dark twice... meaning each character can be one of four possible classes by the end of the game (light/light, light/dark, dark/light, and dark/dark). There's a grand total of 42 classes in the game. Each character has a starter class (for a total of 6), two possible middle classes (for a total of 12), and four possible end classes (for a total of 24). So there's lot's of possible class combinations.
Absolutely. You can pick Duran from the beginning (if it's faithful to the original). But you'll have to pick two others as well to join him. It's like Secret of Mana in that you control three characters. You play as one while the AI controls the other two (unless you have a friend controlling one of the characters). You will have to use their abilities when you need them, and you can switch between the characters as you play. I think it's best to replay the game after finishing with a different combination of characters so you can see a different story. The background story you follow is based on which pair you have on your team.
If you place Duran and Angela on your team, you will get their story. Hawkeye and Riesz have a story, and Kevin and Charlotte have a story. I can't remember what happens if you choose a combination of characters that don't have one of those pairs.
Because the story is based on a pair of characters, I always thought the third character was always kinda like a third wheel. The character will still be very effective in combat, but story-wise, not much will happen with that character as the story will focus more on the pair. For example... if you pick Duran, Angela, and Charlotte... Charlotte will be the third wheel. If you pick Riesz, Kevin, and Charlotte... Riesz will be the third wheel.
So if you really really really like Duran, you can see all of the major stories with Duran always in your party. Like this:
