Also, Vagrant Story was an amazing game for its time, it got great ratings by pretty much everyone, and a sequel was planned, but never made. That was one of the most original games Square-Enix ever made, and they just completely and totally abandoned the IP.
My understanding is they didn't have any rights to Xenogears, so what started as a soft prequel just became a seperate saga with similar motifs and themes.
Xenosaga = game developed by Monolith, published by Namco
Xenoblade = game developed by Monolith, published by Nintendo
Monolith now is a second party of Nintendo.
