My game randomly changed to Japanese text and I don't know how to change it back to English.
I have no idea what happened, but the game is all in Japanese now.

I got that too after a windows update. Got a big red thing in japanese.

Some kind of this crapped out with Steam Cloud. What i did is launch the game. Individually rename the saved games in the document folder to !*.* or whatever you want.

Exit the game. Now that clears your cloud saved game. Then you launch the game again, rename the saved games to the original name.

Exit the game. 2nd option from the top should be the language.

I recommend turning off the cloud sync.

I had an issue with that and my controls also changed a is b and in game x is b

Anyone know how to fix this? Also, to change the default button to A instead of B on the main screen?

If anyone else runs into this, got to options and press the "Y" button to reset the options to get around this. If it doesn't work, look at the top of sceen to see if it lists a different button or key, and if you need to change it to English first, move the first 2 options over to the right until it is just 2 characters then save it.

But I still haven't found a reason why it happens in the first place, still waiting on a good SE response as they don't seem to know how it happens yet.

This happened to me because of nVidia updating the other day. That caused the game to be "optimized" by GeForce Experience, and the japanese language swap.

I fixed it by... uh, following a thread on steam about it.

My nvidia stuff is updated all manually, and I don't use it to optimize. I updated my drivers before I even installed the game at release and haven't been updated since. So for me that wasn't what happened to get it this way, but that might help some others out to prevent it from happening.

The real fix for this is needing to reset Steam CloudSync save information to erase the state switch to Japan region. Google/YouTube search how to do this but here is a broad explanation if you're capable of sorting out the details yourself: First, backup your saves (the 1-12 slots, nothing else); disable Steam CloudSync globally and specifically Trials of Mana; uninstall the game; delete your configs and all of the saved data for ToM in their folders. Reinstall and run the game it should come back with the English version settings and be completely brand new. Close the game, and now you can put your actual save files back. You can run the game again and verify that your saves work first and you're playing on the English version. Close the game again and turn Steam CloudSync back on everywhere. When you run ToM again Steam will see the difference between your local files and cloud files, so tell it to use your local files (they should be newer if you ran after re-install). You will have to re-customize your controls and other settings again.

The reason you want to do this procedure is because even though I was able to find the English text setting and set it, the game was still in a Japanese mode by the title screen graphics and the less than configurable "confirm" title menu button. In Japan, confirm is 'O' (or 'B' on XBox), but in America, 'X' (or 'A' on XBox) is confirm on menus typically. This carried through for text advance in the game I believe and controller settings wouldn't fix this. Also, the control assignment menu itself was messed up in that it drew "+" sign on top of controls I didn't re-assign, and I couldn't seem to re-assign right stick or left sticks. The game was clearly not in a good state. No amount of game reinstalls, deleting/moving all of the save and config files, and deleting registry keys I could find related to Trials of Mana fixed anything because this state (the region the game thinks it's being played in) is synced to the SteamCloud.

Now that I think of it, I may have updated my nVidia driver around the same time causing this problem but the modding tools I was about to use seemed a more likely culprit.

Well SE support still doesn't have remotely any clue on how it really happened or how to fix it still. I don't think they have any dev or platform support to help them out either.

Pressing Y to reset to defaults (and then saving afterwards obviously), was the simple fix for the language swap and button switching nonsense for me. No cloud syncing disabling here ( I was using a recovered cloud save in the first place).

The real problem for me was the Window 10 version 2004 update the triggered the problem (and several worse problems) in the first place. I wasn't even able to successfully restore the previous version because the restore point failed. Half my drivers failed, my controller stopped being recognized by windows (and therefore steam as well), my internet was godawful for some reason, etc. So, I ended up having to reformat my PC...

Fixing this tiny little glitch after restoring my saves from the cloud took like 5 seconds in comparison.

Oh no, I haven't even upgraded up 2004. :X Now, I'm scared.

I usually wait before doing major updates like that one. This time I didn't. My mistake.

I have had problems with buttons switching around on me too... It is annoying as hell because they switched up the confirm/cancel commands on the controller. It used to say press A to start and now for some reason it is press B to start. and it has been hell ever since those two buttons have been switched. I end up doing things I meant to cancel and cancelling things I meant to do 3 or 4 times in a row seriously compromising game execution. Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to get my A button back to CONFIRM?
JackBlack1024 Aug 2, 2020 @ 6:24am
I tried reinstalling, contacting Nvidia since updates, completely removing and reinstalling local video card drivers, remapping the controller buttons(which are completely ineffective by the way), resetting to defaults and NOTHING I can find seems to work. The confirm/cancel commands have switched places on my controller and I either need to find a way to get it back to how I learned it over the past 100 hours or just suffer and learn it all over again... Honestly tempted not to and wanting my money back if this is going to persist.

I tried reinstalling and even deleting all saves and it still keeps everything. The saves keep coming back even though I disabled the cloud saving. How do I get it to stop restoring the backups? I don't use any mod tools. I don't even try to hack the saves. Ever since I did updates to the GTX 770 and launched the game, it changed the language to Japanese and switched the confirm/cancel commands. Did the game update itself and we just didn't know it somehow?

It is believed the DRM screwed up so all the controls and settings are messed up now. SE support was worthless and didn't know about this or how to fix it.

You will have to navigate to settings and use the "Y" button to reset EVERYTHING in settings and then confirm. That should fix it.
