Actually, there is. Those with nostalgia goggles think the original game was perfect (even though it had tons of flaws, such as bugs and major balance problems), and want nothing changed about the original game, so that's why the devs may be hesitating to change things unless they're sure that even most of the hardcore fans will enjoy the changes.
Weapons and armors giving you passives to add to the pool would have been a great idea too I think.
For me this also was a problem with the original game. However this has been partially fixed by the new system of item seeds. You should remember that in the original game after like each battle, a chest laid on the ground and was usually doing trap damage to your characters and contained (often worthless) consumables.
The new seed system works the following way. You find seeds randomly after battles. But in addition to consumables they contain accessories or permanent stat boosters. There are also more consumables for instance one that raises XP, money or loot drop after defeating an enemy.
Now here comes the good part. In addition to these items you build up a Seed Level when planting these. Each new level ups the chances of enemies dropping item seeds as well as the chance to grow rare items from seeds, which starts at around 5% (tested).
For example I found a Ring that prevents one of the status effects after I planted one of the seeds as well as a Potion that permanently improves base SPRT by 1 and another potion that improves base MP by 2.
Since you start at Item Seed level 1 you only have a low chance to get the good stuff but I think after a couple of hours you start to receive more items which makes purchasing gear from Merchants less repetitive than in the original game.
