The whole story is that the dome has been sealed away from the rest of the world for ~2 years. So everyone is trapped in there and everything's gone to heck.
I had one of the more interesting endings. And you can easily find out what happened to the rest of the world with google. I wont spoil it here.
Before the climax of the game, then yeah the world outside is normal 1970's. But once your character uses the maelstrom for the last time using the church helmet you see what ultimately happens.
I'm curious to know which ending the developers consider canon. Probably not the ending I described as it makes a sequel a bit difficult.
If you're curious what helmet i'm referring to. In the sewers, if you take an immediate left, you will encounter a bunch of churchers interrogating a man. Afterward, you can just walk up and take the helmet they were using to kill the guy. This helmet is what unlocks the alternate "world ending" ending when you approach the maelstrom and choose that option. This was actually my first ending (i've beaten this thing 4 times) and it was an incredible ending for the first one.
I like the roleplaly aspect, and the notion that your character is willing to give up their mortal shell and become pure energy is interesting to me. Sort of like the lawnmower man movie. I'm just imagining my body shriveling up lol.
