Roaches way too hard to kill

I took that mission in the swamp to clear out the roaches, I'm level 6 with high stats in rifles and energy weapons but those roaches....way too tough. Even at the lowest difficulty setting they are too tough to kill. I've lured them into walking over the mines but it's still too difficult.

I had thought it was possible also to throw gas cans down on the ground and shoot them to have them explode, but when I throw one on the ground they appear only as lootable stashes.
