There are also a ton of clues that time has passed during the "big bang" event. I was confused when I got out of the cave, but I think that was fully intentional. However, I definitely knew time had passed.
The story is disjointed and I'm struggling to actually give a toss about it, really, because once the story at the beginning is done with, it turns into a bog-standard STALKER omage done in the Fallout style. Clearly, it's what they were going for (I mean, Roadside Picnic and all lmao) but I found the "Corporate entity trying to jive between the Dome and real-life even while they're literally stranded down there," bit far, far more interesting. Post apocalypse is cool and all, but other people have done it before, and much, much better.
Got a feeling I'm going to putter around and try to find the out of the way locations before giving up the ghost, but the main story is, frankly, pretty uninteresting. Oohooo, stuff beyond mortal comprehension. Ooh, c-consciousness reacting to human interaction, oh no! Ooooh, artifacts!
I haven't made it that far into the main story yet but from what I gather,
There was a time jump of several years after the incident in the cave with the relic. You temporarily existed outside of time for that period and were protected from the destructive effects of the apparent resulting energetic event which destroyed the facility and killed almost everyone in it and nearby.
After that the world inside the dome turned into kind of a fallout-like wasteland with the old organizations descending into chaos or splitting up and new factions forming and things becoming generally a lot more hostile and lawless.
Some factions are trying to solve the mystery of the maelstrom and some are simply trying to profiteer off the situation and others are just trying to survive.
Then there's the emulator project. Haven't completely worked out what that is all about yet.
