Dumb question about Tressa's start

So the pirates came and stole stuff, Tressa wants to go get it back.
My current objective is to buy "something" from the captain guy's merchants. I bought a thing, nothing progressed. I bought something from each merchant, still nothing. What am I supposed to do here? I can't actually go to the cave since I get stopped at a sign with a message that I'm not supposed to go that way.

Don't tell me I have to buy everything? I'm not sure I have enough money for that. I don't think she's going to be able to beat anything at level 1 solo since the enemies are based on the rest of the party. Also it isn't giving me access to my other characters like it did previously.

The mini-map will tell you where to go (you can turn it on with a button if you don't see it, I believe R1)
You probably got what you need but are suppose to go somewhere else rather than the cave.

If she wasn't your starter you should have plenty of money for the item you need, and if you don't the danger level in that small area should still be level 1 until you finish the story section (but I may be misremembering there).

The map marks 3 merchants, nothing changed there.
The danger level is level 4, doesn't drop to level 1.

I did have 3000g (I'm uncertain if that's what I had before starting this scenario or not), but spent most of it on a bow that apparently she doesn't even use so I don't even know why she can equip it. Even more silly than Oberic equipping spears for his one special attack but using a sword for everything else.

Okay, so first things first, you must have skipped a tutorial popup.

Have your selector hand pointing at "Attack" when Tressa is the active party member, then press left or right to cycle through her equipped weapons. She CAN use the bow.

As for the merchants, the one on the right has sleepweed, when you buy it he comments on it, asking why.

The target on the map then puts the sparkle in the tavern.

I definitely didnt see any tutorial like that. Whether it wasnt shown because I started Primrose (who only gets one weapon) or I just missed it I couldnt say.

Anyway, I bought the sleepweed and made it through that section.

I got it when I started on Cyrus, and he only has the staff. It's just one of many pop up that you get trained to click through as fast as possible, because they tend to show up after you've figured out what to do.
