Story question: why does H'aanit travel with Therion?
Just started this game last night . . . started with H'aanit and then when to Bolderfall, which I just left a few minutes ago. I'm a bit confused about why H'aanit ended up helping Therion and why they're traveling together now, especially since their objectives are in opposite directions. Did I miss something? Should I have picked a different character order for a more cohesive story?

That's the main complaint with this game. The party members feel like they have little reason to accompany each other, and the story barely acknowledges that you even have party members 99% of the time.

This game is not really one single story, it's 8 stories pack together. I like to think of it kinda like a D&D game, where each player has their own backstory and story quest they wanna do; sometimes the focus is to one specific character, and the others are helping out, but not being the main focus there.

So, yeah, sometimes the story will focus on H'aanit, sometimes Therion, sometimes someone else entirely. That's how this game is set up. Not really conventional but IMO they make it work nonetheless.

I was expecting more of an anthology style, and I'm okay with that, but this seems to be taking it a bit too far (or maybe not far enough; I'd be perfectly happy controlling H'aanit and Therion separately). I guess I'll just have to accept that the characters' actions don't make sense and try not to take the game to seriously! Anyone have any good head-canon to make sense of this story?

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure if I want to micromanage my team according to a guide, especially on a first play-through, but it looks like I have some time to think it over before I get to chapter 2.

This game is essentially a bad version of Saga Frontier.

Anyone who's played both SaGa Frontier and this game would know the way characters work in this game isn't anything like SF.

In most games, allies become quick friends or are already good friends within the story. However, I think that these characters are just traveling together for the sake of convenience and of safety in numbers. It's a dangerous world after all. It's kind of like carpooling with random strangers.

The game isn't 1 single story, its 8 short stories packed together but since its also a game and not just a book full of 8 short stories, they decided to use the 8 characters as a roster for this turn-based game where you can freely jump between stories. They aren't travelling with each other, not really, even though they have these little cut scenes with each other at the end of a chapter. Its more like a medium for a deeper look into the characters' personalities. Imagine a story where there are 8 characters who all live in the same universe, in the same timeline. While their paths may have connected at some points, their main stories don't involve anyone else but themselves. That's why its called O.C.T.O.P.A.T.H. Traveler. Octavia, Cyrus, Therion, Olberic, Primrose, Alfie, Therion, H'aanit.
